Which area in central San Antonio should I stay for a visit?
Hi--
Although we've done a lot of world traveling, this is our first time in San Antonio. We'll have slightly more than a day for our visit, won't have a car and will be doing some of the typical sight-seeing things. Riverwalk area hotels seem to be divided between north Riverwalk/Alamo and south Riverwalk/la Villita. Or, I am also considering a B & B in the historic King William district.
We are well into middle-age, are not partiers or into the bar scene, are fine with walking to get where we want to go, want to check out Riverwalk and the Alamo, enjoy strolling through historic neighborhoods, are not shoppers but if we shop would prefer galleries to souvenir and tourist-oriented stores, prefer more modest eclectic or ethnic restaurants, don't need particularly upscale lodging. Which locale would best meet our needs? Is it worth it to stay on Riverwalk itself? Is this a Riverwalk location noisy late at night? Would we want to be in tourist central? Thanks for any insights you might have.

I would describe ourselves much like you described yourselves. We stayed at the Hyatt on the Riverwalk. Very convenient location. We walked everywhere, except we too the trolley to the King William District. I don't recall any nighttime noise.

Next visit, get a car and go do the Mission Trail. This takes you to the other 4 Spanish missions that were the foundation for early San Antonio. They are all very well maintained, and San Jose has an excellent visitor's center.

We always stay in the King William District, where there are several very nice B&Bs within walking distance of the Riverwalk. Our favorite is the Oge House, but we've also stayed at the Brackenridge.

The Hyatt on the Riverwalk is indeed a great location - central to about everything downtown - and a nice property to boot. The King William area is not far away, quieter and more residential. For a one night stay, either would be fine.

With only the one night in town would we want to spend the evening strolling the Riverwalk area? If so, would we be better off staying right there on or very near to the Riverwalk?
Could we walk back to the King William district at night (say 10:00 or 11:00) safely? And, are we talking a mile walk or a 6 block walk or what?
The Hyatt being referred to is the Hyatt Regency, correct? And, this is in what is considered the northern Riverwalk area near the Alamo, correct? Is either the southern or northern area of the Riverwalk area nicer than the other? Thanks again so much for the help.
