According to a friend of mine who used to work there in college, 50% of the double double at In N Out are ordered
animal style. I love mustard, so these are my favorites!

Here's the secret menu for In N Out:

Animal Style" - bun is grilled with mustard, sauteed onions instead of raw, pickles, extra "special sauce"
"Wish Burger" - no meat, i.e. veggie burger

"Protein Style" - lettuce wrapped around the burger instead of a bun for all of you who are in "The Zone"

"Old Fashioned Style" - ketchup and mustard instead of the weird special sauce

"Flying Dutchman" - two meat patties with two slices of cheese. that's it.

"Double Meat" - Double Double without cheese

"4x4" - 4 meat patties with 4 slices of cheese. Are you SURE you can eat that?

"2x4" - 2 meat patties with 4 slices of cheese for the fromage afficionado

"Grilled Cheese" - cheeseburger, sans meat

"Fries - well done" - get your fries extra crispy and brown the way you like them!

"Choco-Vanilla Swirl Shake" - just what it sounds like

"Neopolitan Shake" - a blend of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry shakes.

Up in NYC, they certainly are trying to one up each other. NOW I heard on the Today morning show about a restaurant, DB Bistro Moderne that's offering a $58 burger. Size is 9 oz and is served covered in black truffles ! (that's what rachets up the cost). Of course this is only a seasonal menu item as the truffles can't be had year round.

There was an identical thread here a couple of months ago. I searched to 2001 but couldn't find it.

As a result I visited In N' Out while in California - just can't understand what the fuss is about. Didn't seem much different from any number of fast food joints.

Port of Call in New Orleans, on the other hand, is a different story. It's a dark dive on the edge of the French Quarter, and the burger is just about the best I've ever had. And unlike In N' Out, you can have it with a beer, which we all know is the preferred beverage to accompany a burger.

In N Out consistently wins the best burger contest in every region they've entered into, including Las Vegas. The burger sales at this chain are amazing. So Ken must be one of the few people who didn't like the double double.

The BEST hamburger ever is at a little roadside bar/resturant in Northeast Iowa called, The Shanti. Yep, it is a shanti. However, for $5.75 you get a one pound hamburger that smells as good as it tastes.(you can order it w/ onions and mushrooms as well) If you are traveling thru Iowa this summer, put it on your map.(Gunder, Iowa) It's the BEST!
