I also love Carlsbad - I have noticed several rental signs at oceanfront properties but dont have names - maybe call the Chamber of Commerce.
The Village is fun to walk around in-
the Coaster Station is right there -
I even used the Coaster to go to the airport -

Wow! Thanks much for contributing. A week ago I did not know whether to stay in Sant Fe or PB! Now I am familiar with the counties, where to stay and the traffic congestion problem. You are really a wonderfully informed group.

Paula and TahitiTams--Enjoyed the dialogue. From what I guess, you both agree that while the condo in IB may be beautiful, it probably would not be in our best interest to be there. Even , though we do not mind solitude, it is nice to be in a community where we can take short walks and have a nice lunch at a patio type restaurant. Paula, on an aside, I contacted the owner by e-mail and informd him I learned about him through the Fodor Board. He sent me back an e-mail and said, "what's the Fodor Board?" I thought that was funny.

L84-YourDescription of the 2 areas was wonderful for me. I can picture what you are saying and my husband read your post as well. You settled the situation. We do not want a place; we want a destination. We are seriously considering renting here for a month or so if we like it better than Tucson.

bigtyke--Thanks for the link. We are interested in a condo in Encinitas and we are waiting for the owner to get back to us. In the meanwhile I will take a peek on that website.

Thanks to all of you. Only question is that noone has mentioned Mission Bay or Beach . Are these nice areas or should I not take a last glance there? Thanks as always for your welcomed input, Carol

Yes it's easy to take the Coaster from Carlsbad. Great dining options in Carlsbad Village.

I live in SD and would not recommend Mission Bay or Mission Beach. I find them too busy and touristy and young....20's. Encinitas is quite lovely and has a nice downtown main street area with some cool restaurants and bars and boutiques. Solana beach is also great. Anywhere north county coastal up to Carlsbad is very nice.

Have made contact with home owners of 3 properties. We need your final input if you are familiar with these areas. One condo is in Del Mar apparently near the race track.

The 2nd home is in Encinitas on Neptune ave. oceanfront and a map shows us they are near Grandview beach 9 blocks away.

The 3rd townhouse is also in Encinitas near Moonlight Beach.

All of the above are directly on the ocean with unobstucted views and no street between them and the ocean. One is on a bluff. All have direct beach access for strolling on the beach.
All have beautiful decks with barbque grill and tables and chairs overlooking the water.
There is a total of $300 between the least and most expensive so they are in a similar class. If any of you have knowledge of these areas we would Greatly Appreciate your opinions as we have no family or friends in the area who can help us.

L84Sky--Surprised you asked me that question since you were one of the people who influenced me. You told me about the AB desert and a sidetrip to Julian. Earlier today you described the differences in your opinion b/n IB and the Encinitas area. You posted an opinion on the weather in SD versus NM I am very grateful sot take the compliment!!!! NOW can you answer my question about the differences in location of the 3 condos we are thinking about. Thanks, Carol

Honestly, I think at this point it's six of one half dozen of another. Pick the unit you like the best.

Wow, Carol. People here have been trying to help you. Not sure why you answered L84SKY the way you did but I certainly don't understand your tone. You never did say exactly when you were coming to San Diego so I am sure she just wanted to know. After that last comment, I don't think you will get too much more help.

Paula, Carol did say that they rent in Tucson for the month of February, so I assumed (always a dodgy thing to do!) that they're looking at January or March. Carol, a little clarification would be helpful there.

I like Del Mar and so I would take that one.

Yes, I remember that idleweiss, but it seemed that you had decided to do San Diego another time. Lots of people ask about SD, it may not have been you.

The winter is perfect and the beach areas will be pretty much yours to enjoy with the locals.

paula, thanks you're sweet but I wasn't put off by carol.
It felt like that if we were having this discussion in person, there would have been a friendly exasperated nuance there, that isn't accomplished on-line without a liberal sprinkling of smiley faces.

Barbara-Yes I know the OP was coming from Tucson and was considering San Diego or Santa Fe. But as you said, it was either Jan or March so that's what L84 was asking.

L84SKY-I am glad you were bothered by Carol's response. I guess I was just a little bothered by why she got defensive evening putting NOW in caps. All she had to do was answer the question nicely. It just hit me wrong after all the answers we had given her. Maybe I just hadn't had enough coffee! LOL

Well I still haven't had enough coffee. Meant to say even (not evening).

Idleweiss-If you put the links to the condos, it would help us give you answer because we would probably then be able to tell more about the location.

Paula --I am the least confrontational person I know. I would NEVER knowingly insult anyone and least of all people who are trying to help me. I think you took my comment to LASKY incorrectly. I was praising all the great info I received from LaSKY and then I asked for help about which condo to choose. I meant the capital now to be like a joke,to imply since you have given me such good advice are you ready to NOW handle a most difficult (not really) question ie;which condo might be better located?

Upon re-reading my thread I can easily see why it was mis-understood. It was poorly written/Meant no offense.

I will post the links to the condos so you can give me an opinion, but I think MonicaRIchards is right. They are probably equally well located.

Is the Coaster a form or transportation into SD? You all mentioned it and I assume that is what you are talking about. Is it worthwhile for a tourist to use it when going into SD?

The coaster is a train that goes between downtown SD and Oceanside

I think its a great way to do a day trip if you dont want to drive
Some of the trip goes along the coast/
part of it inland

I even used it to get to the airport from Carlsbad ( have to transfer to a bus downtown but did not have to wait long)

idleweiss-Well that is the problem with posting on the web-people can't always tell your intent. Usually when you use caps it means shouting and is not well taken.

As far as the condos, if you put the links I am sure we could give our advice. If they are all oceanfront, then Del Mar might be a little better because you're closer to La Jolla, San Diego and would save driving time and dealing with freeway traffic. But I like Encinitas, too.

The Coaster is a train that runs from North San Diego County to the city. It have stations in Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas and Solana Beach and then several stops in San Diego. It's good for avoiding traffic into San Diego but of course you won't have a car at your final destination. You can use some of the trolley lines to get to Balboa Park, etc. Here is the website for the Coaster.

Ah, thinking about idleweiss' vacation is certainly more fun than working today.

paula does have a good point about Del Mar as far as driving goes. Plus it's near the 52 if you decide to go east to Wild Animal Park or points beyond like Julian.
And you would be close enough to scoot down to Torrey Pines for some morning hikes.
Not to mention that Del Mar has one of my favorite natural foods stores, Jimbos. They have great take out too, even if you don't care about the organics.

But as someone else said, Carlsbad, Encinitas or Del Mar- they are all nice. Del Mar is just a skooch more centrally located.

You just can't miss with any of those cities. If I were making the choice, I'd Google Earth it.

I live in Mission Beach and that's where I would recommend you stay. Mission Beach is so local to everything a tourist would want to do. The Condo's for rent are absolutely beautiful. You have the beach on one side the bay on the other, lots of restaurants and shops to walk to. Ten minutes from the Gas Lamp, the Zoo, and Seaworld. If you did not want Mission Bay then I would opt for La Jolla.

The 56 would be the best route from Del Mar to go east.
