Where to stop on the way to Yellowstone?

For our trip to Yellowstone in August we will land in Billings, MT and plan to stop for the night somewhere on the road. The idea is to allow a full day for the Beartooth Highway and to reach our first park destination, Canyon. We are generally slow travelers, stopping a lot for pictures, and not driving too many hours each day - I think that pace would work for us, so please don’t suggest driving all the way to Canyon.

Now, the problem is, where to stop? I was thinking Red Lodge, and the Blue Sky cabins really look beautiful, but they have a 2-nights minimum policy. So, is there a similar alternative in the area for one night? While we would like to be close to a restaurant for dinner, it does not need to be in town. Ideally, the best option would be a place to relax after the flight, with a nice view, maybe a stream/pond close-by, and not necessarily in Red Lodge. Any suggestion? Thanks.

Red Fork is a delightful town. We stayed at Rocky Fork Inn, which I recommend highly. The rooms are large and extremely comfortable. Ask for one right on the river. This is a B&B that will suit even those who don't like B&B's: http://www.rockyforkinn.com

Your hostess will give you good advice on restaurants, etc.

HTTY,
Thanks a lot – We love B&Bs, and the Rocky Fork looks great. I’m sure we’ll be happy there.

Rock Creek Resort is a great place for the night and the Old Pine Dell Restaurant is also good.

Rock Creek Resort @ 6380 US Highway 212, Red Lodge, MT 406 - 446 - 1111.

Agree that Rock Creek Resort is an excellent spot. Used to live near Red Lodge and stayed there once for a special night with DW. Also second the Old Pine Dell Restaurant.
