Where to stop between Charleston and Savannah

I'll be driving from Charleston to Savannah. Can you suggest a town inbetween the two cities to stop off overnight? I know it's only a two hour drive but I'd like to spend a night in a historic inn or bed and breakfast in a beautiful southern town.

I thought Beaufort was a charming small town with a new waterfront park. We only stopped for a quick visit. One guy was netting shrimp from the sidewalk. Looked like there might be a good restaurant or two.

The obvious choice is Beaufort, SC. It fills all your requirements. They have their own small historic district, The Point, which is quite beautiful.

Beaufort is the best of all of them. Prince of Tides filmed there and the most southern, authentic little town you'll ever see. Also do the opposite and go to Hilton Head and find lots of outlet malls and 200 good restaurants and world class hotels and beaches.

Thanks, everyone. Beaufort it will be. Do you think a two night stay in Beaufort would be too much? And since you've been so helpful, can you recommend a specific inn?

Two days might be a bit much, though if you do a second day, you will enjoy driving out to Hunting Island State Park, on the Atlantic. It's beautiful and the drive out is scenic! Portions of the Viet Nam scenes from Forest Gump were filmed on Hunting Island, and portions of the shrimping scenes were filmed at one of the little islands on the way out to Hunting Island.

We stayed in a B&B in Beaufort that was used in the exterior and hallway scenes from Prince of Tides, when he was being taken to meet his father (grandfather?). It's a beautiful old home, white picket fence, and for the life of me, I can't recall the name of it now, sorry.

Beaufort used to be a "getaway" for us when we lived in Savannah and we normally went just for the day. It's only about an hour drive out of Savannah.
