if you decide on Hanalei we stayed there for a week last dec in this vacation rental:
http://www.poi.net/~kevdev/
i would recommend it, it's very clean and the owner has set it up as a great rental. it's a 1/2 block to the beach and 2 blocks to town. you could have as much activity or quiet as you desire.
and it's within the price range you mentioned.

Ok, so i am leaning now to going to the north shore and really just getting into the Bahi hai vibe... something that is the opposite of being on Waikiki for 12 nights.
Has anyone stayed at Sealodge? I mapquested it, and it's 2.2 miles from Princeville hotel.
I am concerned about rain.
I know, I can't walk to dinner. The condos behind Princeville don't seem to have any views of the ocean and I want to walk out on my deck in the AM with coffee and look out onto the ocean!
So, i will drive to dinner!

When will you be going?
Princeville a very pleasant, short drive away from beautiful downtown Hanalei where you will find a variety of places to eat and bars for imbibing.
The views from Sea Lodge are gorgeous, but it you want a view of the north shore coastline and Makana Peak from your condo, take a look at Pali Ke Kua.
It has been skewered (like a kebob) here lately, but the Mediterrean Gourmet up in Haena (25 minutes from Princeville) is a wonderful spot or an oceanfront cocktail and dinner.

Thanks, I will look at those condos as well. The Kuhio condos on the south shore look like amazing views as well!
Hmm...two night in each place could solve my quandry.
Thanks for the Leads.
I will check out the aerial photos of each on wizardpub.com

I DID it, I decided!
Thanks everyone!!
I took the specific advice of
iamq and looked into Pali Ke Kua.
I am staying at an ocean front condo. It looks very nice,
unit 111. It looks towards
Bali Hai omg!
No AC, hopefully it will be ok.
I have one last night, that I will stay either East side or South and hit "Roy's"
Thanks for the help!!
mahalo!

I'd love to hear how this turns out, beachkomer. I love Hawaii and often go solo. I've not considered Kauai (yet) because I assumed it would be too quiet for me, and that I'd need a rental car (neither which is true on Oahu).

Well, if I wasn't coming off of 9 nights on Waikiki, Kauai might be too quiet for me too....lol...
I am going to pack a book, some movies, go to dinner or cook and just enjoy the Bali Hai view over a glass of wine.
It will (hopefully!) be one of those trips that I can remember fondly when I'm 90.
We went to Steamboat in November and did nothing.. Really. Just read books and walked around and watched movies. It renewed me!
Can't wait to see Kauai!
I'm going to plan a few activites and then just wing the rest.

I'm sure Kauai will be horrible, with all the VOG, rain, mosquitoes, etc; etc;
Last time we went to Maui, first morning: we awoke to an Earthquake
(Oct. 2006) there were mud slides, rain, floods, fire alarm at 2am...
it was horrible. I will never go
back.
Consider yourself warned!
It was our best trip yet, love me some livin' on the edge...
I'm sure Kauai will be just as bad.
