Hi:
We have just returned home to Vancouver, BC, Canada;
We had a wonderful 2 nights, 3 days, at the Meadowlark Inn, Calistoga.http://www.meadowlarkinn.com/
Wonderful bed in the suite with many patios and windows, incl. french doors onto them; with great privacy.
The grounds are incredible to walk around; including well cared for horses, abundant flowering trees and gardens, pool lovely and hot tub is large. Privacy is first class, the hosts ensure there is a very friendly atmosphere with advice on which wineries to visit; history of winery families and all kinds of interesting views on this location.
We would return to this accommodation if we travel in that direction again.

I like the town of St Helena, but am not sure about accomodations there. There's lots of cute restaurants and shopping.

In St. Helena there is the El Bonita Motel that would be an economical choice.

Most places in Yountville would be more than your budget. In Napa, there should be several places to choose from.

As I write this there is a box full of hotel search sites to my right. Just type in your dates and locations and see what places they find in your price range.

I've heard of the Meadowolark Inn (not to be confused with Meadowood). Isn't that kind of a naturist retreat?

The best places to stay in the valley are anywhere in the vicinity of Hwy. 29 or Silverado Trail between Calistoga and Yountville which are 18 miles apart.

The city of Napa is 8 miles south of Yountville, it has a completely different feel than if you're in the valley. However, your budget will be a problem so you may need to go down to Napa as Otis stated above. Foodwise, I like Yountville and St. Helena.

In St. Helena I'd stay at Harvest Inn. Yountville has better choices, better food and better ambience, IMO. Great choices in Yountville would be Vintage Inn, Napa Valley Lodge, Villagio, Petit Logis, Luca.

These all could be budget busters and (I think?) you want to check out on a Saturday which most hotels in this area generally don't allow.

St. Helena is my favorite but can be pricey. Otis beat me to the suggestion of the El Bonita.

We are also thinking of a trip to the Napa area in late Dec or early Jan. I didn't realize >> your budget will be a problem so you may need to go down to Napa as Otis stated above >>

Parrothead - does this mean that Napa is not as nice or upscale as Yountville or Calistoga or St. Helena?

"does this mean that Napa is not as nice or upscale as Yountville or Calistoga or St. Helena?"

It just means that Napa is a much larger town than the others and has a wider variety of lodging and dining options. Napa also has many of the chain hotels such as the Westin, Embassy Suites, Marriott, Best Western, etc. as well as a host of smaller luxury Inns and B&B's in the downtown area. There are often some very nice deals in December and January except at the holiday period. Use some of the search engines like Expedia to see what is available for your dates.
