What do you mean by downtown? What do you have to be near? Will you have a car? There are only a handful of hotels that are walking distance from the Downtown Mall area. There are a few more between the Downtown Mall and UVA Grounds (and depending on which one, it's a hike to either of the campus or the Downtown Mall).
If it's just because you want to walk around, I'd see what's available near the Mall (the only one I've ever been in is the Omni, which tends to cost a bit more), but then I'd simply take what fits your budget and drive to where you want to go. Parking near the Downtown Mall or Grounds is not hard, and if you have to pay, it's still very cheap.

OMNI would be prefferable over Hampton Inn unless you want to be closer to the UVA grounds. OMNI is on the Downtown Mall where most of the good restaurants are. There is a VERY nice B & B downtown on E. Jefferson Street - Court Square Inn.

That Hampton Inn looks nice and is in the middle of some very good restaurants. You could walk to UVA Grounds or the Downtown Mall from there *but* it might be longer than you might normally consider walking. I would not walk it at night - not that it's in a rough neighborhood, but you walk through some slightly less populated stretches on the way. I'd simply drive unless I had a lot of time to kill.

Thank you Bill44 and Kgh8m.
Now I am really confused, I am
checking the Inn, and the Omni.
We are three adults, that is why
I chose the Hampton Inn and Suites
because its a bedroom with a
sofa bed in the living room.
