Thanks ya'll. Adding these suggestions to my list. Can't wait to go.
The vb game is JC schools, mid October. But I will check to see if there is a game that weekend. Thanks for that tip. Very helpful.

Hi Fodors. What is Town Lake?
Is staying in the downtown area of Austin safe for two women to walk to the "action" and then walk back to the hotel, do you think? There is a game that weekend, but my sister thinks we shouldn't have problems finding something.

Hi Heavens,
Town Lake is actually a dammed-up portion of the Colorado River that runs through Austin. It is very picturesque and there is a walking/running/biking trail that loops around it. It's also a great place for rowing, kayaking and canoeing.
Downtown Austin is generally very safe and you should have no problems if you are staying in one of the downtown hotels (which I would definitely recommend). Just use the same caution you would walking around anywhere at night.
If by game, you mean a UT football game, I would reserve a hotel room now. Also, you might have to do some hunting to find a room in the lower 100's so better to get started now.
There are tons of restaurants, etc. downtown so if you stay there you really don't need to go anywhere else. But, if you'll have a car, there are places we can recommend going for nice views, etc.
Have a great time in Austin!!!

UT Home football weekend? Don't count on being able to find something close (walking distance and affordable (low $100s)
All the hotels listed above are great location, but you'll be pressed to find something under $200/night in that area 5 weeks before the game.
If you find something at a good rate, book it asap. The town will be full both Fri and Sat with UT fans.

What about the Extended Stay America on Guadalupe Street right near 6th and Congress? I can get two doubles for 119 a night? Think I could do better? The location is good and the price seems ok to me. Thanks.

Agree with goodleg: Vespaio is a must.
Is Jeffrey's still well regarded? We had a great dinner there on 9/11.
The hotels mentioned have been recommended by my DD, a (former) UT grad student, now faculty, over the years.

I have stayed at that Extended Stay before and its location is very good fro accessing bars/restaurants. I ahve done better than 119 before there but if it is a weekend (particular when UT is playing) , it will eventually sell out. I would definitely reserve it and if a nicer option is available just cancel later.

Well, I went ahead and booked ESA bc of the location. We are stumbling distance from the bars and music joints. A friend also said that Iron
Works is their favorite restaurant downtown. Great BBQ, which I love. Also plan to drive around, see Lake Travis, the Capitol, the school and ???what else. We will have a little time to play tourist.
Thanks all for your help and suggestions. I am always happier in life when I have a journey to a new destination to look forward to in the future...

Hi Heavens,
BBQ is the most debated food in town so I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions. Personally, we LOVE Ironworks. Just so you know, you order at the counter when you walk in and then get your drinks and pay. Sit wherever there's room.
Since you have a car, I would recommend going to Mt. Bonnell too. Great views after a short hike up about 100 steps. A definite photo op.
At Lake Travis I would have drinks/snacks at the Oasis or at Iguana Grill. The view is better at Oasis but the food is better at Iguana.
If you want some real Mexican in a great place downtown, go to breakfast or lunch at Las Manitas on Congress.
A really good place for happy hour (during the week) and 1/2 price yummy appetizers is Saba Blue Water Cafe on Fourth. Love that place!
Lots more recommendations if you want them. Let me know if you have any questions.
