Where to stay first time in Las Vegas?
I am taking my husband to Vegas for his Birthday and was wondering where to stay. Some say Paris, which were thinking of but others tell us all kinds of different places. Help!!

There are any number of maps of hotels on The Strip in Las Vegas with a web search. Most are quite out of date, though. Barbary Coast is now Bill's, Aladdin is now Planet Hollywood. And, the new Palazzo and Venezia are missing from most of them.
When looking at a map of the strip, keep in mind that these hotels appear to be side by side, and they are, but the properties are huge and way huge, so it's a bit of a hike from one end to the other of any of them, and from one to the next.
I totally agree with the advice to stay as close to the Strip and Flamingo Road as possible.
Also, when looking at maps, the convenience of the monorail is very deceiving. So, it's best not to assume that a hotel close to a monorail stop will be really convenient.

I'll echo djkbooks about the Las Vegas monorail. It runs behind the different Strip hotels, not at the front, and it's a loooooong hike from each stop to the front of each hotel. I found it worthless.
There is a city bus that runs along the Strip continuing north to the Downtown area, but between the number of stops and the traffic, it's not quick.

There are maps of the Strip (and the rest of Vegas, too) there as well as reviews of the hotels and links to their websites. They also have reviews of shows, etc.

website there are several maps and other info that may be helpful
One thing is to look at the skywalks. They connect several hotels/casinos by walkways above sidewalks cutting some walking time...
Last time we stayed at MGM Grand. We liked it..NobHill restaurant great..
prices were reasonable..and we saw Jimmy Buffet in concert which was fun & thrn just walked upstairs to the room...
Ballys & Paris are connected so one year we found a great rate at Ballys and just walked thru Casino to Paris. I think it was Paris that had a great small intimate sushi restaurant...
There is a great vodka Bar I think called Reds..they keep it very cold and even give the ladies mink coats to wear...

I'd agree with FainaAgain to stick close to the center of the strip. Avoid 'cheap' hotels though - the Imperial Palace isn't what you want, trust me! Try Treasure Island or the Mirage as good options but not top top dollar like Bellagio or Wynn.

Ok, this is pretty long but try and stay with me.
Im not sure what your budget is so im going to give you a few options. Also, you didnt say if your flying in or driving. If your driving you can stay off the strip and save ALOT of money. I have stayed at Arizona Charles Boulder several times and its a nice hotel. Its off the strip on Boulder highway but a short drive to the strip. Also, if you are driving every hotel/resort has free vale parking so you can drop the car and go right in the hotel. I strongly recommend it
If your not driving you MUST stay on the strip. You dont have to stay in the small area in the center of the strip if you dont have a problem with taking something like "the Deuce". The Deuce is the double decker bus that runs up and down the strip about every few minutes. You can buy an all day unlimited pass for $5. I had a blast ridding the bus several times to go where i wanted to. You get to meet a bunch of people and to me i felt like I was more a part of Vegas.
Also, Circus Circus has just redone all there rooms in there west tower and they have a special if you call 1-800-362-8935 and mention offer code "good deal". The price is $46.95 a night during the week with a free night if you book at least 3 nights. Im going in June and I booked 3 nights for the price of 2 so im pretty happy.
If your going for more upper end I have stayed in the Paris, the Bellagio, and the Venetian and all of them were fantastic. If you can get a fountain view room at the Bellagio theres nothing better. We ended up staying in the room from about 7pm until after midnight just watching the fountain show. It was really fantastic.
Good luck and have a great trip.
One last thing, the Peppermill is on the strip and has great food for a good price. Its very Vegas and we love it. Also, the Hash House a Go Go is fantastic as well but you need to be really hungry because there portions are HUGE!!

July will be hot for outdoor dining unless you wait till about 10:00, but dinner at Mon Ami Gabi (at the Paris) is a fun french bistro. not sure if they reserve outdoor dining or its just first come/first serve, but their outdoor dining is on the Strip facing Bellagio fountain show. they have wonderful filets (steak) and nice desserts. the french martinis are good too. have fun, you will enjoy that area of the Strip. make dinner reservations no matter what if you are there over a week-end.
