Where to stay at Union sq. san francisco?

My husband and I are celebrating our 10th anniversary at the end of the month. Plan on spending 2 nights somewhere at Union square or nob hill. Does anyone have any suggestions on a nice place with a guaranteed view of city or bay from the room. We are going all out for this trip, willing to spend 350-450/night. Thanks, col

I really liked the Westin St. Francis. I know they have city view rooms, but I don't know if you can guarantee one. I do think they have the most comfortable hotel bed I have EVER slept on. Hotel was beautiful, and service was great.

The Fairmont Hotel is very special. It is about 5 blocks from Union Sq. Many VIPs and celebrities stay there.
(including Beatles, Springsteen,etc..)
You can request a room with a view of the bay and alcatraz island.

Also, The Sir Francis Drake Hotel is located near Union Square. This is a great location for shopping. The rooms here are very nice.

One other hotel near Union Square is The Clift Hotel.
These are all very old, elegant hotels.

The views from the Mandarian Oriental cannot be beat. It is on the top floors of an office building and is more downtown, but the service and views are fantastic!
Another choice would be the Ritz-Carlton. It is on the back side of Nob Hill.
I think the Westin St. Francis is too convention oriented for a romantic weekend.

If you've got $400 to spend on a hotel for a romantic weekend, choose Nob Hill over Union Square. The latter is rather grungy and crawling with homeless (at least it was in 1997).

Brian, thanks for the response. Do you have any hotels in mind at Nob hill? Is the Mark Hopkins to full of Business people/convention types? Col
