Greenville, SC, at the foot of the mountains, is a wonderful small city with a truly vibrant downtown, with a great park, a big concert venue for everything from country to symphony, a terrific minor league baseball park, and restaurants for every budget and taste. Streets full of pedestrians seven days a week!
Hiking, rafting, canoeing and Asheville (!) are only a bit over an hour away, and it lacks any hipper than thou vibe.
