Asheville NC or Greenville SC?

We would be arrivind early afternoon for an overnight stay this October, We are looking for someplace where we might hit a few shops or maybe a park in the afternoon and then have a nice dinner that evening before heading out the next morning Would one be a better choice than the other?

Asheville is a really great small town with an artsy, progressive attitude. It has a nice downtown area. I don't want to offend anyone from Greenville but IMHO, it is just another town along the interstate. Stay in Asheville.

Why Ashville? Just curious is it as big of a city as Greenville? I am also interested if it has a good Walkscore. I would like to be able to get around easily with out a car?
Also is it good for a person who is new to the area?

No offense, padams21, but your view of Greenville is out of date.

If you drive by on the interstate, it is just another town on the interstate, and a pretty horrible one at that, like Richmond or many other cities.

If you drive into the city, it is one of the great downtown success stories of the last 20 years. A highly walkable area, great restaurants, minor league baseball, an urban park along the river, lots of downtown dwellers, Trader Joe's and or Whole Foods,

It's high season in Asheville, so if you choose it, reserve now.

Dani: welcome to fodors. You have topped a VERY old thread. You really will do better to start a new thread of your own. (Many folks won't notice the dates and try to answer the OP. Your questions will mostly get lost in the schmaze)
