Where to go for long weekend?

We are planning a Labor Day weekend trip - its our anniversary. Not sure where to go - must be within 2-3 hours driving distance of Virginia Beach and have nice resorts/hotels with plenty of activities, restaurants and scenery. We like "active" type vacations. Ideas, anyone?

The Wright Brothers museum. I've never been there but would like to.

How about Charlottesville? It might be slightly more than three hours, but not much. I think it's beautiful and very romantic. There seems to be plenty of nice restaurants and shopping. You could go for a hot air balloon ride or wine tasting, visit Monticello, take a cooking class at the Boar's Head Inn. In fact, Boar's Head Inn looks like a nice place to stay. I've never been there myself, but was checking it out on line at one time.
