Do you want to drive? Fly? Budget? Age of kids? The most logical option to me would one of you visit the other. Have you been to Montreal? Do you have passports? Everyone always assume meeting half way is the best idea but with last minute and holiday traffic, maybe just one of the families traveling makes more sense.

If you all want to go someplace and don't mind flying, maybe look on lastminute.com

What about NYC? A city trip for Labor Day is often less expensive than something at the shore and you're not dependent so much on weather.

we want to meet somewhere in the middle so no one has to drive the full 6-7 hours with kids

kids are aged 5, 4, 2, and 6 months

basically we're just looking for a rental house to hang out and visit with each other!

I don't know about finding a rental house for just a weekend - and Labor Day at that - on 1 weeks notice.

Coastal Southern Maine (York area), lakes around Laconia, NH or any of a number of ski areas in NH or Vermont - obviously not to ski, but many of these areas try to promote summer tourism and have condo-type accomodations that might work.

I don't think you're going to find much in the way of vacation homes or condos on labor Day weekend on short notice. I do have a suggestion. Try Columbia County, NY, which is just short of New England tourist areas. The Columbia County Fair takes place in Chatham that weekend and you are also a short drive from the NE tourst areas of Lee, Stockbridge, etc. You might still be able to find a hotel/motel with a string of empty rooms or, maybe even, some conneted rooms for adults and the kids.
