Where to get a great breakfast in Chicago

I will be getting into Chicago at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning and would like to start my visit off with a great breakfast. I’m flying into Midway then heading over to see the Art Institute. Can anyone recommend someplace to get a really good breakfast?

Well, I don't know of any great breakfast spots near the art institute.
But if you're driving, Lou Mitchells at 565 W. Jackson is a Chicago institution for breakfasts. Probably about a mile
from the Art Institute. Just go a block south of the Art Institute and drive west on Jackson. If Jackson is a one way street in the wrong direction, take adams and then go a block south to Jackson. There are probably good places near the Institute I just don't know them.

Thanks Dan. I will check out Lou Mitchells. I would take a cab from the airport. Maybe I can walk to the Institute from there or grab another cab. Thanks for the suggestion!

You might try the Atwood Cafe at State and Washington (from there, walk two blocks east and three blocks south to the AIC). Mitchell's is a real institution, with long lines even at that hour for a traditional heaping breakfast. You should have plenty of time since the AIC doesn't open until 10. Why not go to www. metromix.com and ask Phil Vettel, the Tribune restaurant critic, for his opinion?

Thank you Patg for your responses on both threads that I posted. I followed the links that you suggested (for restaurants and Hansom cabs) and found so much information! I am sure to have a wonderful time in Chicago.

BTW, we decide to go to Lou Mitchell's for breakfast when we get into town. We are going to save going to the Atwood for their "Toyland Tea service." It's sounds very nice, tea for adults, hot chocolate for kids and a keepsake photo. Cute.

Any Walker Bros. is a good place. But you can find many many decent breakfast places anywhere in Chicago.

For future reference to those looking for a great breakfast in Chicago....the Bongo Room is the BEST! It's in the Wicker Park/Bucktown area (N. Milwaukee Avenue). It is very busy, so get there early. They have a one of a kind menu. Stanley's, in Lincoln Park, has a good breakfast/brunch set up. It's all you can eat and they have a great "self serve" Bloody Mary bar. Enjoy!
