How about down here where I live, St. Simons Island. It is 51/2 hrs from Atlanta. My grandchildren love coming to the beach. You all come and see me! I didn't know some of my favorite posters are right here in Georgia. My best to all of you, Joan

On second thought. Look at something away from the ocean. We're starting this hurricane business early this year. We haven't been hit for years, but it keeps me edgy for few months. I love it here, just don't like this worry. Good luck, Jkoan

To take this post in a different direction...
We're now hoping to spend Thanksgiving in the mountains. We'd like to rent a house that could accomodate 12 people and is really picturesque and not too far from a town. I've checked out a few of the rental companies but nothing's really looked great. As long as the place is no more than 1.5 hours from a major airport (most likely Atlanta but if anyone has suggestions in NC, that'd be good too), we'll check it out. thanks!

I'm a weekend house leach--don't own my own unfortunately--so really can't chime in on this but wanted to let those following this thread that a couple of us are planning an Atlanta GTG for Sat., Sept. 17th in either Buckhead or Midtown...I've posted on the US and Europe boards so look for it!

We just bought at Lake Hartwell in June. E-mail me if you'd like to discuss the lake. We obviously love the area and think the lake is great. We haven't found fine dining in the area, but that's not our thing, so no biggie for us. They have some great places for good eats, though, just not fancy. We are watersports fans, and so is out 9 year old, so we don't get bored. The lake is great for skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, etc. with kids. Very little boat traffic, even on weekends. Hope it stays that way. Prices are going up -- I would buy soon, or you'll get sticker shock. we bought a bigger house than we were initially looking for, but are very glad we did. we are renting it out when we are not using it. We are not counting on covering our mortgage, but if we can offset it a bit, we are happy. I think 10 years from now, we will be really pleased we made the investment. The area is very attractive to retirees and the baby boomers are coming! If we don't sell, we might just retire there ourselves. Ocean property is way too high and with the sharks and hurricanes -- who needs it??
