where is the best city to spend Christmas?

We live in Asia but are planning to spend Christmas outside Asia. What city/country do you suggest spending Christmas and New Year? It's just going to be me and my mum this year.

our current choices:

New York - will it be freezing during this time?

Las Vegas - my mum likes this one, but is also open to other alternatives

Need your suggestions as we probably have to make bookings soon.

I'm sure you will get many good ideas, but I like Vegas simply because everything will be open. However, I wouldn't spend the entire time in Vegas. Mabye include a few days in LA or San Diego?

Vegas will work very nice. Depending on where you are now there is something special about spending Christmas day on a beach, Florida? New York will definalty be all decorated up and is someting to see through in a broadway show and you have a nice trip. Most things in NYC will be shut Chiristmas Day otherwise bussiness as usual. Weather in New York can be any where from sunny and 70 to snow. Most likely highs in the 40's low in the 30's with little or no snow on the ground.

I have absolutely no first-hand experience but, I have heard that Savannah is beautiful with manageable temperatures. Fodorite opinions???I have been to Williamsburg, VA which was tremendous but definitely low-key compared to the options on the SC/GA coastline.

Uh, Moose, when was there *ever* a Xmas/New Year's in Manhattan where the temp was 70 degrees? If, one day, it does reach that during that time of the year, I will run to Australia to try and escape *serious* global warming issues.

And by the way... you simply CANNOT beat NYC at Christmas time.

According to wunderground.com the record high for Christmas day in NYC is 64 deg. F, reached in 1982. Downright balmy!

daisy88 - How many days will you be visiting, and what do you want to do while you're here? NYC at Christmastime is spectacular, and yes it will likely be cold. Then again, the record high for Vegas for Christmas day is only 69 (1964), but it's average high of 56 is definitely warmer than NYC's average high that time of year.

NYC at Christmas is the only answer. It's the most exciting time in the most exciting city in the world.

Yes - it wil be cold. But it's christmas - it's supposed to be cold and snowy - that's part of the charm. And It's rarely so cold (below teens) that you're really uncomfortable outdoors - as long as you're dressed warmly. (It's not antartica!)

(Can;t imagine what you would do all that time in Vegas - have never been able to stand more than 2/3 days there without being bored stiff).

Are you looking for some place "festive" for Christmas?? If so, Vegas is definitely not it. We were there last year and it was just like any other time of the year. Plus, it was VERY crowded everywhere! Lines for some of the buffets were outrageous!

NY would be colder, but not freezing.

Lets just put it this way, I live in Vegas and there is nothing quite like Christmas time in NYC! I LOVE Vegas, and the hotels (especially Belaggio) look pretty, but the city itself doesn't go all out like NYC does. My husband and I spent Christmas 2000 in NYC and I'll never forget, we landed in Newark and had to have gloves on to retireve our baggage beacuse the bag claim was near doors that people exited. Coming from vegas we didn't have winter coats, I had gloves, neither of us owned a scarf. Needless to say we purchased them first thing the next day. That night we got there we put our stuff in the hotel, went down to the lobby walked outside and thought it wasn't too bad, then we turned a corner and "wow" the wind whipped through those buildings, it was the coldest I ever felt in my life!!! So, in case you still don't understand, YES NY will be freezing!

I stand corrected -- wow, 64 degrees. I'm usually happy if it's 46 degrees.

I'm not the best to ask about Vegas... given the choice of a weekend in Vegas or having a cigarette put out in my eye - pass the Camels. It's one of those love it or hate it kind of towns.

But we LOVE NYC near the holidays. It is so wonderful - and so many great things to do. And usually surprisingly affordable.

I realize this is posted on the US Board, however, have you considered Quebec? Old Town Quebec is magical at Christmas.

What could be more magical than to spend Christmas in North Pole, Alaska? For info, contact Mayor Jeff Jacobsen's Office ([email protected]).

Very much agree with dwooddon. Quebec City is tremendous AND very close. You feel like you are in Europe with just an hour long flight from North East! Shhhhhh. Bring long underwear, brrr.
