dfrost, what an amazing description! Almost makes me want to leave NYC to live someplace rural... Thank you for the "word picture"!
mms, you reminded me how much I loved the fall colors in Saratoga when I was in college there. Skidmore has one high-rise dorm that is taller than anything else around. The view from the top floor lounge was unbelievable: miles of color rolling over the Adirondacks in every direction. Made studying a little difficult when you were up there!

My votes for awesome leaf viewing spots would be West Point Military Academy in New York and Acadia National Park/Bar Harbor, Maine. I am more famaliar with West Point than Maine (I went to Maine once), I go to West Point every year in October, and I can't imagine any site more gorgeous than the fall leaves glistening against the Hudson River along the Military Academy, there is even a castle peeking through the leaves on the mountainside across from West Point.
I just made reservations to stay in a bed and breakfast in the Woodstock, NY area next month to enjoy the fall foliage. I understand that from Mohonk Mountain Resort in NY, you can see six states on a clear day, so I am excited about seeing the foliage, visiting antique shops and historical sites, and dining at the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park, NY. (home of Franklin D. Roosevelt) and taking a cruise along the Hudson.
The trip is my October birthday present to myself!

Gatineau Park, Quebec Canada... just 15 minutes from Ottawa. The most gorgeous reds and oranges I've ever seen! Ottawa itself is breathtaking, but the Gatineau's were unbelievable.
a description from wiki...
"Gatineau Hills are a geological formation in Canada that makes up part of the southern tip of the Canadian Shield, and acts as the northern shoulder of the Ottawa Valley. They are also the foothills of the Laurentian Mountains which stretch east through Quebec, beginning north of Montreal and joining up with others into Vermont and New Hampshire."

STOP IT! DO YOU HEAR ME SHOUTING!!
All this talk of fall has me really depressed. Here in Austin, it's still summer and probably will be for another couple months. Looking out my window, my trees are still all green, no sign of fall yet. Watered my lawn today so it wouldn't dry out on me.
Happy almost October, y'all!

I agree with many of the posts about VT, NH and most of New England along with parts of the Mid-Atlantic states. Even NJ has some mighty fine spots.
However, being from the east and use to the vast collage of color, I was blown away by the golden aspen against bright blue skies and red rocks in Utah and north rim of the Grand Canyon in late September.
