Where for Special Anniversary?

Our 10th anniversary is approaching and my wife and I are negotiating on where to go. I really want it to be something special.

We had talked about Las Vegas, but I am not sure how special it can be. So, my wife has told me to come up with a counterproposal. So far, I have thought of Paris or Seattle/Vancouver. My wife has thrown in Hawaii.

I am posting here for suggestions for a one week trip tied to our annviersary. We will go in late October, early November. We do not like resorts, so beach or cruise is not an option. We do like driving tours. We are not limited to the United States or any other region.

Your suggestions are appreciated.

Maui is beautiful, but has gotten VERY expensive, especially to dine. The Olympic Penninsula in Washington State is lovely, especially the town of Port Townsend, the San Juan Islands, and Victoria, British Columbia, which is accessable by Ferry in Port Angeles. Another lovely place that is one of my absolute favorites is the Northern California Coast between Point Reyes and Mendocino. Charleston, South Carolina is another very beautiful and romantic place. Whatever you do, congrats on your anniversary and just enjoy being with each other.

Yes, it may be a bit chilly, but all the more excuse to spend a lot of time in the pub next to a peat fire.

Hawaii sounds really good, but maybe not if you aren't beach people. Paris or a brief driving tour of the Loire Valley in France would be really nice. Closer to home, some time in Quebec might be pretty romantic, too.

What about flying to Vancouver, B.C., renting a car and driving around that gorgeous city and surrounding environs. Then take the ferry to Vancouver Island and explore the capital city, Victoria (lovely and different) and the Island itself which has incredible forests, drives and views.

You might consider staying at Sooke Harbour House just northeast of Victoria -- it's got only 24 rooms (all different and delightful) and comes with free breakfast and lunch. Exquisite setting with gardens.

In Victoria itself, stay at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. Again, something fun and different. Have afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel. Visit Butchart Gardens.

I vote for Paris, but make it a surprise. I did, with husband for our 2nd anniversary and he still talks about it. Our anniversary is mid Nov. but the weather was still nice enough for us to eat outdoors most days.

Sedona, Grand Canyon and then a quick flight to end it in Vegas........get the best room with patio at the El Tovar for a night at the Grand Canyon...that was basically our honeymoon 10 years ago, with a few days in Scottsdale to start it off.

Sedona, Monterey Peninsula, CA, (wonderful romantic B&Bs across from ocean in Pacific Grove--Green Gables, Seven Gables), Paris might be rainy--we've been twice in early October and that seems to be the changeover time, no to Hawaii if you're not beach people, NW as in Seattle etc is wonderful but most likely rainy, I don't know New England, but it will be leaf season. New Orleans? Good time for the weather. Santa Fe, also good time for the weather. Las Vegas, bleech (but I'm a minority in this, I know) Ireland, if you can cope with the inevitable rain---we were there last in October and had more rainy days than clear. Wales--wonderful castles, romantic hotels, again some rain but not as bad as Ireland. The Loire Valley is very romantic, great driving trip as is Tuscany/Umbria and that's a prime time in Italy. Let us know what you decide and congrats.

Paris or the Italian Coast! But with only a week, maybe you could save these destinations for your 25th. In the meantime, I'd head to the California coastline. Big Sur, Carmel, Cambria and a few nights in San Francisco.
