When do Aspen trees change color at the higher altitudes?

We will be driving in the mountains near Denver next week... too early for the higher altitudes?

We were in Aspen on Sept. 26/27 in 2002 and it was wonderful. When you go to visit the maroon bells its one of the most beautiful sites imaginable. Also the road from Durango to Gunnison was amazing. Paul

The color amount and time varies every year, but it's always beautiful. I have to get busy planning my annual color trip!
