Are you staying at the View hotel the night you are in MV? If so, ask for a premium view room on the second or third floor. Another great place to view sunsets and sunrises; it's worth the price. Also, by far the best time to see Horseshoe Bend is sunset.

Looking at staying at Goulding's to be nice and close.
I'll only be in MV for one afternoon, and one morning, so if I go with the sunset and sunrise tours, I won't get to see either from Goulding's...
Still looking into options though, and knowing there's a good view to be had from there doesn't hurt!
Thanks for the tip re Horseshoe Bend too.
Vaga, to come back to your earlier comments re Needles, Island-in-the Sky, White Rim Road - I'm not yet familiar with these places, but I'll take note for when I'm doing further research.
Cheers,
jj.

Bailey - Wow. Maybe I can use my 12,000 pound winch this time?
Yes, I am familiar with the Navajo culture dating back to 1540 in New Mexico to Kit Carson.
Judy Jetson: My list of preferred books to aid in your Canyonlands research.
IF you have a 4-wheel drive and thrive on primitive pristine canyons, theb Canyonlands-Maze District is THE place.
1. 'Escalante Utah to Moab Utah' (includes Maze and a description of each of the campgrounds that must be reserved about one year in advance. And the White Rim Trail - again, reservations one year). Available in E-book and print (287 pages)
2. Hiking, Biking and Exploring Canyonlands National Park and Vicinity' Hiking (serious): Very comprehensive focusing on hiking not general touring information like roads, motels, etc. Michael R. Kelsey. My 318 page copy covers all three Canyonland Parks. Tiny print and vague hand drawn maps. Print version only.
Caution: Hiking directions are not suited for amateur hikers.
3 . Backroad 4-wheel driving: 'Canyonland National Park Favorite Jeep Roads and Hiking Trails' Very well written. White Rim Trail (road) is the premier scenic area in Island In The Sky. This 190 page book has an excellent description of Island In The Sky 110 mile road.
4. Needles - Kelsey has a section on this park. The book titled 'A Hike in Needles: Canyonlands National Monument, Utah." I have this book; don't recommend it. It is more of a story than a guide. Hopefully, there is a book somewhere. Suggest this site: http://www.americansouthwest.net/uta...es-hiking.html Then using those trail names, search YouTube where there are many videos. I've been there twice and will go back next month. So many trails, so little time. Superb Indian pictoographs, especially The Faces. The All American Man is the best (hard to locate)
All above books are available on Amazon.

jj, the View Hotel is a much better location than Goulding. It's just across the road from the entrance to 17 mile drive. From the rooms you actually look right down on the road and you have an unobstructed view of the "mittens" from the rooms balconies. You might find that if you take the sunset guided tour on 17 mile, you won't feel the need to also take the sunrise tour.
If you are a movie buff and you have seen Forest Gump, the scene where he is running down the highway in MV was filmed on hwy 163 just north of where you will be turning in to enter MV Tribal park. Just a tidbit of trivia.
