Thanks so much. We will be staying at the Hilton Ballpark because we are with a large group for Robotics COmpetition. A World Festiva, our team represents Florida.
I know we have vans for the Cavern day but hope to make most of the treks to the America's Center Convention COmplex of foot. I see there isn't a lot of choice for the lunch spots in walking distance.
Your input and ideas are so helpful!! Keep them coming!!

I like to use Urban spoon to check out restaurants -- maybe this will help: http://www.urbanspoon.com/n/28/2708/...is-restaurants.

That sounds so fun. Would love to see the robotics competition.
I use saucemagazine.com and their "find a restaurant" at the top of the page. You can specify if you want outdoors dining, family friendly, price, area of town, so forth.
If I were downtown with a group of 12 yo boys, I'd walk them up past the Arch, along the riverfront, to Laclede's Landing and the Old Spaghetti Factory. It's quick, cheap, fun, crowdpleasing. Laclede's Landing has never been the safest part of town at night, but I would not hesitate during the daylight hours. The old buildings have a lot of charm.
At lunch hour, take them to CityGarden http://www.citygardenstl.org/
8th & Market Streets: a fun sculpture park. There's always at least one food truck parked nearby, during the week anyway, which might be a novelty for your boys.
You can walk out the pedestrian walkway on Ead's Bridge at night to see the skyline lights and the Arch reflected in the river; science-minded kids should enjoy that.
I like to go inside the Old Courthouse, peek at the history exhibit. Visitors seem to find it interesting that slaves were sold from the courthouse steps pre-Civil War. (Dred Scott case, tried there, might interest some of them.)

Our April trip to St Louis was terrific. Thanks for all the great input here. We enjoyed such sites as the Arch, Cardinals Baseball game, Meramec Caverns, City Museum, St Louis Science Center, Ted Drewes Custard.
Our rooms were at the Ballpark Hilton so walking to the sights was easy. The St Louis bakery and Pickles were super spots for easy breakfasts on the way to the Arena.
Only regret was that we didn't get to a great bar b que restaurant like Bogarts.
