What to do in St Augustine, Fla.
We will be in St. Augustine for a few days. Could you please tell us what things we should not miss. Historical, restaurants, places to stay. Any special food of the region? We were told to stay in the historic district. How many days is enough? I would appreciate any information . Thank you in advance.

The historical district would be a nice area because you can walk everywhere. Also, the St. Augustine beaches are a great location to stay. You can walk for miles on the wide beaches.
I would suggest taking a horse and buggy tour through the city first to acquaint yourself. Some of my favorite stops are: Flagler College (in the middle of town) and the beautiful tiffany glass windows in the cafeteria...most tourist don't know about this..., the many galleris, the lighthouse, and the street with the arbor of live oak trees (I can't remember the name but, it is the same one where the Fountain of Youth is located).
The Gypsy Cab Restuarant is creative food and popular with the locals. Don't miss Kilwins ice cream in the center of town.
I would stay away from the usual tourist traps...Ripleys, Fountain of Youth etc....

If you're going this time of year, I'd probably stay in the historic district. It will probably be a bit too cold to enjoy the the beach. If you do decide to stay at the beach, be sure that you are on one of the nice stretches of beach, not one that consists solely of boulders. Ask the hotel what their beach is like.
In town there are lots of great bars/pubs/shops to stroll between and a huge fort that you can pay to get in or survey easily from the outside for free. We weren't able to find any non-tourist-focused restaurants, but we probably didn't look hard enough.
If you stay in the historic district, I would think that 2 full days (3 nights) would be enough.

one place that i had never heard of (and i've been to st. Aug dozens of times) is FT. Mantanzas. everyone knows about the castillo in old town but theres a smaller fort several miles south off of A1A on a small island in the middle of the river. its run by the state park service and i think the boat ride over to the fort is free. Probably 2 or 3 days are enough to see everything.
