If I turn up in Vegas on a Weds, Thurs night in January, what are my chances of getting a room? Do hotels on the strip do deals, and if so, what's the best way of getting one??

Yes the strip hotels will deal but it is not as easy as you stated. To begin with rates will vary up and down depending upon what is going on that week. There are over 3,000 conventions a year in Las Vegas and these affect rates a great deal. A room at a decent hotel on the strip may be $59.00 this week and $159.00 next week. It varies a lot by the property as many of the conventions are held at the various hotels. Sometimes they will run specials. For example the Flamingo Hilton had a $39.00 /nt rate for quite a while earlier this year.

Your best bet is to book your room before you arrive. A good place to check on room availability and prices for a given date is the "Las Vegas Reservation System". You can do it all on line. Their URL is:

Those are about the cheapest prices you will find. I would also check with the "Las Vegas On Line" site for the convention schedule. The URL for them is:

I would also call the hotels to see if they have any specials. Often they are not advertised. To just arrive and hope for a deal is pretty risky.

Strip Hotels -- special rates are just a tease....

I know several people that took advantage of the Flamingo Hilton's $39.00 /nt. rate earlier this year. It certainly was not a tease. You have to understand that Las Vegas hotel rates are very volatile and move up and down according to anticipated occupancy. However to say that the special deals on the strip are simply a tease is completely wrong.

In mid-January you should be able to find a room center/south strip for $50-90 per night. Before going to a broker/reservations service, I would strongly suggest doing a little preliminary searching on your own looking at the web sites of the various hotel/casinos. (A lot of the brokers/ consolidators require that you pay when you book and there's no cancellation or refunds if you don't make the trip.)

You might consider Priceline as an alternative. I've had some success with them on mid-week reservations. If you don't care where you're at and want a room at a low price, it's worth the effort.

January is a slow time, pools are closed, weather is not as nice and the casual tourists, families are staying away. Rates will still be high Friday-Sunday.

I 2nd the recommendation on www.lvrs.com;the BEST place to get the lowest room rates! I have used it many times qithout any problems. January is a good month to go rate wise;just avoid Jan. 6-9, wich is the annual Consumer electronics Show, the 2nd largest convention in Vegas(After Comdex computer show in Nov) and one of the largest conventions in the country.
