What to do?

We are planning a trip to D.C. in August 1999. Is Williamsburg as neat as we've been told it is? What should we see? Is it worth the drive? Kids ages: 9, 11 & 13

Although it's been a few years since I was there, we really enjoyed Busch Gardens at Williamsburg. It's a standard theme park place, but the roller coasters are fabulous, and it's very pretty with the trees and mountains. Sounds like something your kids would really enjoy.

Williamsburg is very neat. The Rockefellers in the early twentieth century painstakingly reconstructed the original capital of Virigina. The restoration was never considered a commercial enterprise, but was a gift to the nation. The gensis of the American democracy occurred in places like the House of Burgesses at Williamsburg. It was a training ground for men like Thomas Jefferson.
Williamsburg offers various programs in the evening. You should decide and make your purchases in the morning. We noticed that many of the shows were sold out by afternoon.
We were there in November of last year with my thirteen year old daughter and her friend. They really enjoyed a ghost show. We gathered in the park at dark and walked to several houses where a different performer told a ghost story.

We enjoyed Williamsburg especially for the re-enactments and people dressed in period clothing. We went with a 2 year old, and realized it would be a great place to go when our children (2 now) are about YOUR kid's ages. I think it's a great place/way to learn and enjoy American history. Be forwarned, it can be very hot, we were also there in Aug., dress minimally.

Williamsburg is great! We took our 10 year old daughter there for five days during spring break. History as a subject means something to her now!

We were going to go to D.C. as part of a week long trip, but only did Williamsburg (saving D.C. for a future trip). We were able to see everything, including the diffrent "events" in Williamsburg's history acted out by the people in character.

and a bonus:

Try the meat pie and the pecan pie at King's Arms Tavern.
