What not to miss in Durango

I will be visiting Durango for the first time this July. Any suggestions on what I shouldn't miss? What is the weather like? What is the best horseback riding tour? Thanks for your responses!

The Durango/Silverton train trip-breathtaking scenery. I highly recommend you take the train up and the bus back. It makes for a very long day doing it round trip.

You will really enjoy walking around Silverton. It is an old mining town that has kept its' charm.

Not crazy about Durango as a town. liked most of the other towns better on the san Juan highway loop.

General palmer hotel is great. Vaudeville show at Strated hotel was good.
Otherwise town has some shops, but not much charm.
didn't do the train ride.

I agree with Joan.Durango is too big with strip malls etc. We stayed in Ouray instead, very quaint mountain town. Loved it! What I wanted to do while I was in the area was see Mesa Verde but, couldn't because of the fire. That's definately what I would do if I were in that area.
