What is there to see at Ground Zero now?

My son is heading out to DC, Philly and NYC as part of an 8th grade end of year trip. Part of the itinerary includes a stop at Ground Zero. I thought that was kind of odd now almost 3 years later. Is there some memorial there or are they destined to look at a construction site? Would appreciate any feedback as the trip meeting is coming up and I'd like to discuss this if necessary.

There is nothing to see at the site besides a new piece of construction for the PATH trains (to NJ) that are now stopping there again. I am a teacher myself and think it's weird to bring kids there in its current state - it's totally cleaned-up, but you are right - there is nothing for them to see, unless the value is meant to see "the site" which still bothers me since it will always be a graveyard to me.

The area itself looks like a construction site, but the tall fencing around it features some interesting displays--photos and text--of WTC history. These can be interesting and informative to read, though I'm still not sure that this would be the best use of their time.

Thanks for your replys. Though he'll be mortified I think I'll ask about it at the meeting.

I don't want him and the rest to go there to be looky-loos but if there is some way for them to pay respects then maybe that's ok. I'm not convinced it's a good use of time.

If the teacher's motivation is to help them understand the event and the magnitude, you might want to suggest they also visit the Globe that used to be at the center of the WTC Plaza. It's now in Battery Park, a 10 minute walk from the WTC site, and it's damaged condition might be more tangible than what is now a construction site (although, I recognize it never will be just another construction site.)

Additionally, inside the "Wintergarden" you can see some displays and the plans for the new site. There are also good views of the site from the Wintergarden windows

Thank you for the alternate ideas. Those sound more reasonable than just visiting the site. Perhaps the tour director already has this in mind. The itinerary is not so detailed. I wanted to be ready with some info so I really appreciate all of these reponses!

What is there to see??????

How about the magnitude of the destruction?

How about how close other buildings are to the site?

How about the reverence of the site?

How about St. Pauls Chapel?

There is a very moving memorial inside the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum. I visited the World Trade Centre site and the Intrepid last week and though both were an emotional experience, the memorial inside the Intrepid is very tastefully done and honors those who lost their lives.

The 8th graders would also be fascinated to be onboard a decomissioned aircraft carrier.

I'd definitely suggest going to St Paul's Chapel. Although it was right next to Ground Zero, it received almost no damage and served as a place of refuge 24/7 for workers at the site for almost a year. They have a very nice tribute there honoring the many workers at the site. I think that would be of particular interest to 8th graders.

Thanks everyone for your help. I haven't been to NYC nor have I heard much about what the site might have to offer this age group.

I don't understand GoTravels sarcasm or patronizing tone. And what's with the 6 question marks after your repeat of my original question? Is all that necessary or were you having a bad day?

How about just being helpful?

Suzie,
It's not the first time nor will it be the last, just ignore it. Most of us understand that your question is a perfectly reasonable inquiry.

Fodorites are so great. Even if the tour director doesn't make this an extraordinary experience I will be able to speak with my son before he leaves to orient him to look for these other perspectives while he is at Ground Zero. Thanks so much everyone for helping me with this.

As a teacher, parent and American, I think a walk through St. Paul's Chapel is a valuable learning experience. We visited this area in Dec.--spent some time at the Battery Park memorial, a few minutes at the Trade Center site and spent about an hour in the chapel. It's right across the street. If it's not already on the itinerary, you may want to suggest it to the teacher and chaperones. I trust the kids will be prepared beforehand in regards to appropriate behavior.
