Whales in May in Hawaii?

I will be visiting the islands in mid May. Has anyone ever seen the whales there this late?
Thanks!

I've seen them before around that time, but sightings that late into the year are more the exception than the rule.

I went on a sailing trip from Maui to Lanai during the 2nd week of May and we saw 1 whale.

PWF does whale watches until May 15. We officially say Aloha! to the whales that day, but most of them have moved on the their Alaska feeding grounds already. PWF reported three sightings last Friday, the last day of our daily reports.

If you're going to be on Maui, you can try a whale watch with PWF. If nothing else, it will be a nice 2 hour cruise.

We took PWF "Farewell to the Whales" trip mid May 2002, saw two or three females with young. I think the crew were a little surprised too !
Great trip, saw lots of turtles on the way back to Maalaea harbor.

You may want to try a dolphin excursion.

Whales are gone by May except for a few stragglers.

But, if you ever go back to Hawaii in the winter, here is a good website that will help with whale watching.

It shows some tours on all the islands.

It also says where to watch them from land.

I live on Oahu and like to watch them from Makapuu Point. A few weeks ago I saw about 20, some within a few hundred yards from shore.

But the best way to get close to them is with a tour.
