Whale Watching Tour - out of Boston or off Cape Cod ?

We are staying in Boston mid-September. We are planning to drive out to Cape Cod and are trying to determine which location would make more sense for us to take a whale watching boat trip.

- Should we go on Saturday out of Cape Cod? If so, should we go all the way to Provincetown? How long will it take us to get there on Saturday morning from Boston?

- Or should we go out of Boston on Sunday?

- Should we book ahead of time?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Have never done it out of Boston but have out of Montauk and the boat was full - latecomers had to wait for an afternoon boat.

I would definitely check if they have availability and what time they leave. I would think you'd have a lot of trouble getting to Province town by the time the boats leave - but you need to check their schedules. Not sure why you wouldn;t just leave direct from Boston since you're already there.

Thanks nytraveler. Good to know the boat was full. I will narrow down some options and see what I can do.

We will be driving out to Cape Cod for the day anyway, so we were just trying to figure out if one location was better.

Thanks again!

We did ours out of Boston; the boat docks right there by the aquarium. We saw quite a few humpbacks. If you're at all prone to sea sickness, I would take something before you go out.

I believe all the whale-watching boats in that region travel to the same location where whales congregate: Stellwagen Bank. This is closer to Provincetown than Boston, but I don't think the difference is enough to be worth the long drive to P'town.

Capxxx is correct. All of the boats from Boston to P Town go to the same area. In fact, they communicate with each other to document sightings and provide information. The boats out of the Boston aquarium are high speed with docents on board.

No need to drive just for the whales!!

I just reserved a trip out of Provincetown for Sunday. You don't have to pay in advance for a reservation, just an fyi!
