Whale Watching!

W will be in Maui during the last week in April. Is it worth taking a whale watching trip? Is it worth taking a whale watching trip this late in the season? Do they even run these trips so late in the season?

I could be wrong but I don't think they actually run the trips in April because most of the whales have moved on by then. However I did have an oceanfront room in Maui one year in April and did manage to see a couple of whales one morning from my lanai (bad spelling).

Don't know if all tour companies have tours as late as April, but here is ssome info:

I don't think this is anything you need to book in advance as there are a lot of companies that have whale watching tours.

We took a whale-watching trip at the very end of March this year. We were advised by the operator (Kai Kanani, Makena) that it was the very end of the season and there was no guarantee that we would see any whales.

We ended up having an amazing experience--one of the crew members said it was the best trip he'd been on in 25 years. But, still, the crew was very surprised; they almost didn't run the trip that day.

Pacific Whale[.org] Foundation runs whale watching trips until mid-May. I believe that the foundation still offers discounts to those booking on-line, ahead, an incentive to book early. Many operators of the trips will guarantee you will see humpbacks through April.

I've seen many whales in late April, including fabulous breaching from the shore and a PWF boat. The whales do tend to move further from shore as the season recedes, so you may get a closer view on a whale watch trip.
