Wow, I've never heard that. It's been years since I've stayed at that Omni, but I have read numerous comments about it still being a "dump". I'd certainly choose the Westin at the same price, and without a doubt I'd book it if it's $60 less!

I have stayed at the Omni several times and have had wonderful experiences. I have been in everything from a standard to a suite and all were very clean, comfortable, and very nice. The location is terrific as well. I've never been to the Westin though.

Patrick,
your advice is usually very sound, but it really surprises me in this instance.
Although I have not yet stayed at the Omni, I was seriously considering to for my next stay in NYC. The reviews on Tripadvisor.com are excellent and when passing by it, I thought it was pretty classy.
Could it be, that you have another Omni in mind? There used to be two Omni Hotels in NYC, one being the supposedly top notch Berkshire Place (which is the only one left), the other one the Park Central, which was a bit more low key, and thus might fit the description "dump". The Park Central is still in operation, although not an Omni, as they found it unfeasible to fix it up to meet their standards. I believe Omni terminated the management about ten years ago. The Park Central is located basically next to the Sheraton Manhattan, if I recall correctly.
Other than that, I unfortunately cannot give any advice, as I have stayed (yet) at neither the Omni Berkshire Place nor the Westin Times Square.

Indeed, the Omni Berkshire is a lovely classic NY hotel. I think the answer to alexg's dilemma lies in what he/she will be doing on the one night. The Westin is a new, modern hotel in the Times Square area (on Eight Ave across from Port Authority so not a very attractive site but convenient for theater) The Omni sits at 52 st & Madison ave. So what are your plans for the night? Theater? The Westin is better location. Coming and going from Newark? Westin is better. Otherwise...get the Omni.

Well it's true the Omni is a block away from Rock Center, but boy, if the concert is at MSG, you could easily walk from the Westin. You'd be on the same side of town and I'm sure parking would be cheaper so all in all, you'd save probably over $100.
Whichever you decide on, join the frequent guest program so you might get an upgrade or the club floor. I believe on the club floor at the Westin, you get a free breakfast.
