Weather in San Diego

Hi everyone. We are heading off this Saturday to our long-awaited vacation in San Diego! I've been checking the weather in SD and surrounding communities (we're going to Disneyland in Anaheim, too), and it seems like there is a lot of variability depending on where you are in the area. Is that right? What I"m seeing is highs of 70 in SD, but much warmer weather in Anaheim.

Are there big differences in temperature throughout SD, depending how far inland you go? Like what about Balboa Park area?

Thank you!!

yes, the further inland you go the warmer it is. but, balboa park is only a few miles inland so won't be a big difference from the coast.

ltt is right-- as you move inland from the coast, it gets warmer in coastal deserts like southern California. The rule of thumb (according to a stats-oriented friend) is: Barring Santa Ana conditions, every five miles inland adds 2F of heat. During a Santa Ana, forget it; I remember once having 104F at our house (roughly five miles inland) then driving to the shore where it was 86F (almost 4F per mile!).

Anaheim is about 15 or 16 miles inland, so it's automatically going to be hotter than a coastal town. But there's another fact to consider: San Diego's microclimate keeps it slightly cooler than just about every point in Orange County. I haven't ever been able to ascertain why. But I live in Long Beach, and our temps tend to be about 5F hotter than San Diego year-round. In fact, the best indicator of San Diego weather is to look at the weather in Santa Monica. And by the way, Anaheim isn't one of San Diego's surrounding communities-- it's almost 100 miles away!

Balboa Park isn't far enough inland to have discernably hotter weather than at the coast in San Diego. But it doesn't matter-- San Diego's a great town and you'll have a wonderful time.

Hi rjw, I'm going to be staying at the Westin in Long Beach on Saturday 17th. Any chance of a small GTG for dinner? I'll be in town for the Special Olympics, my daughter is competing.

efojdma, sorry to hijack your thead! I can tell you that while the coast in San Diego, where I live, is cool (for us), only a few miles inland it can be mid-70s. As itt said, Balboa Park is not far from the coast and so can be cooler. It's really a day-to-day thing, so just have a light sweater or jacket you can take off if it gets warm.

Hi Barbara!! A 17th GTG probably won't be possible, unfortunately-- we're starting putting in hardwood floors in my old condo, as well as starting a complete gut job on the kitchen in our house. Time is tight to get the condo on the market, and we want to do some demo work ourselves so the heavy reconstruction can start. Sorry....

Hi efojdma..
The weather has been weird lately..the June gloom was not present last week but it has reared its ugly head this week but hey you are in SD and you will have a blast! We have several different weather temps for Coast, Inland, Mountains and then Desert.. so depends on where you are..Balboa Park will be fine (hopefully)..
Barbara..

efojdma,
Maybe it would help if you could see it on a map?
I live close to the 5- the other day it was overcast here, I spoke to a friend who lives closer to the 15 and it was sunny and warm. Later that day I went to El Cajon and it was hot.
