We desperatly need your help with finding a hotel in Manhattan. Please!

I know I should do my research on this forum and buy some travel guides but this time we will travel to NYC not for fun and we don't have much time left. Last night we fond out we have to be at the NYU Hospital next Monday. She will have treatment for five-six days but doesn't need to stay in a hospital. So we are looking for a hotel near 34th and 1st. The hospital gave us names of UN Plaza, Waldorf Astoria, etc. These places are too expensive for us right now. We are alrady spending our savings for the procedure. Are there any places around $150 near 34th and 1st? We must have a private bathroom. Please help us. Thank you

Jay:

Try the Dumont Plaza Hotel on 34th Street, between Third and Lex. I believe it has kitchenettes, as well as private baths. Best wishes.

Jay--I don't know if this hotel is anywhere near where you must be, but it is very economical. It is managed by Catholic nuns. I t is old, but clean. There phone is (212)929-1010. Location- 332 W 23rd St. My son has on-going chemo at Sloan Kettering, and Leo House(the name of above hotel) has an agreement with Sloan for reduced rates. Perhaps your hospital has one with them. As I said, I know little of NYC, so this may be too far, although the rates may justify cab fares or might be a short subway ride.

There is also a Howard Johnson Inn closeby on 29th and Park Ave, and they usually offer some good rates. The HOJO 800 number should be able to give you info.

There are not alot of hotels in that immediate area, but there are several off 5th Ave, like the Day's Inn and Best Western again, you can get the 800 number from information or on the web.

Hope things go well.

You may find the Dumont Plaza over your budget. The Quality Inn at 30th and Lexington mentioned above is a good bet. Check the chain's web site. Another possibility is the Murray Hill Inn just around the corner from there on 30th between 2d and 3d. They have small doubles with private bath for less than $150 and offer discounts for a week's stay. Only caveat with Murray Hill Inn is no elevator, if that's an issue. www.murrayhillinn.com. The Quality Inn and Murray Hill Inn are just about as close to NYU Hospital as 34th and 1st, and closer than the Dumont Plaza; around four blocks. I live three blocks from NYU Hospital and my signifact other is a physician in training there, so if you have questions or need advice about the neighborhood and medical center, please feel free to email me directly at the above address. Good luck!

Thank you all for your wonderful help. You made this Valentine's day very special for both of us. Your generosity was the best gift we could wish for.
I followed your suggestions and got a great rate of less than $150 at Howard Johnson and also Quality Inn. Tonight we will decide which one will be better and cancel our reservation in one of them. Thank you for all your help and your wishes.
