We are going to Hawaii in October, have some questions:
1. Do we need visas coming from California?
2. Are the flights domestic or intentional?
3. Is it true, we will not be allowed out of the airport without a lei?
4. Will our ATM cards work there, or do we need to get local currency from the bank at home?
5. As Hawaii is 3 hours behind, do we still have to be at the airport 2 hours early or 1 hour late?
6. Do we need electricity converters?
7. What kind of SIM card do we need for our cell phones?
8. Can we get around with English only? Should we speak louder so the locals will understand?
9. At what time the lava is flowing, and on which island? If it’s raining, will the lava still be flowing?
10. What are the cleaning hours when the volcanoes are closed? Children will be very disappointed if we arrive at the closing hours.
11. Can sunset be seen from the East side of an island?
12. Where can we see “Hawaii 5-0”? Or is it an area code for HI? Is luau included? I am confused.
13. Why is Spam so popular when it only clogs emails?
14. Are there any topless beaches? I hope not, as it will be too distracting
for my husband.
15. To take a boat tour, would we have to line up outside without air-
conditioning?
16. And the most important question: are the islands anchored all the
times in the same places?

Very funny, Dayenu. In 1953, I went to Oahu to join my husband who was transferred to Schofield from Korea after the war. One of my aunts (only by marriage, I'm glad to say) had heard that the islands were receding into the sea by some tiny fraction a year and cautioned me to be sure to come home before they sunk. As you can see, I made it.

Our daughter has misgivings related to Hawaii. When my wife and I were making plans for a second honeymoon there, our then-5-yr-old announced that she wanted to come, too. We put her off by telling her that children were not allowed in Hawaii, which seemed to placate her at the time.
(I know! What kind of terrible people are we?)
She's 27 now, and knows the score. Her misgivings are actually about her mom and dad.
(We're not really that bad. We did take her and her two older siblings along with us three years later.)
