Can't comment on the golf (I'm retired from that game) but I would much prefer to spend my time in the Highlands area than the Waynesville area, although admittedly, Waynesville may be more what you are seeking - http://www.highlandschamber.org/, http://www.golflink.com/golf-courses...olf-city-state, http://www.waynesville.com/

I would be partial to Highlands myself, although I'm not into golf so I can't really comment about that. The town itself is very nice and the surrounding area just gorgeous. Too bad you won't be there for longer...there are some really nice waterfalls in the area.
If you are looking for something a little luxurious, the Old Edwards Inn right in downtown Highlands looks gorgeous.
