I-95 traffic will be re-routed around the west side of the Beltway and, in some cases, onto I-395.

Stay away from the Beltway altogether.

I'm going down this weekend, leaving Saturday AM.

For those Fodorites heading North on I-95, I would recommend the following route:

Take I-95 North. When you reach the Capital Beltway (95/495), continue straight towards Washington. This will be Rt 395. Follow it into Washington, across the 14th Street Bridge and then stay to the right. You will be on the Southeast Freeway, and it will end at Pa Avenue. Turn right on Pa Ave, and the next light turn left onto Rt 295. This will dump you onto the Balto-Wash Parkway. Take the Parkway to the Harbor Tunnel, then you will be back onto Rt 95 North of Baltimore.

Look at it on mapquest.

I normally go the same route but take Rt 50 towards Annapolis, up 301 to Rt 896 which jogs over to Rt 1 then Rt 13 to the Del Mem Bridge. It adds a couple more miles, but there is NO traffic on 301. You hit a few lights on the short stretch of Rt 13 going thru New Castle.

Going South, take Harbor Tunnel to 295 (Balto/Wash Parkway). Stay on 295 into Washington and take Exit 3B (Howard Road). That will take you to the South Capital Street Bridge, then follow the signs to 395 South which dumps you into 95 at the beltway (Springfield).

Traffic was horrible going North out of Washington. Got on RT 50 and found out that the East bound lanes were closed on the Annapolis Bay bridge due to an accident. Shot up RT 97, and 895/95 backed up for miles due to an accident. Shot over to RT 40 to parrallel North. Took a long time to get home yesterday.
