We're back from D.C. and I thought I'd post a brief trip report. The weather in Washington was beautiful this past weekend and the crowds were huge. I wouldn't go back again Easter weekend, but was restrained by by kids college and high school schedules. The Embassy Suites downtown was a good choice for a larger family. The place was a zoo with lots of young kids but it was a good choice for us, having a suite rather than a room. Thursday night was walked into Georgetown and had dinner at Clyde's which was good. I'd recommend the burger. We walked around, did a little shopping and saw the campus. Friday we did a tour of the Capitol, saw the American History Museum and Air and Space Museum, ate lunch at the Chop House (I thought the food was only okay but the rest of the family was happy) then had a drink on the rooftop terrace of the Washington Hotel. Nice views. We saw Ford's Theatre, did alot more walking and later had dinner at Matchbox. Excellent wood fired pizzas. We went to the Billy Joel concert which was great, despite poor seats. Saturday was a frustrating day. I had booked ahead of time the Old Town Trolley tour, plus their nighttime tour of the monuments. They way oversold for this daytime tour (you don't purchase for a certain day, that is left open and they had way too many people trying to get on the trolleys and not enough availability). It's a satisfaction guaranteed ticket, and I was easily able to get my money refunded with a phone call when I returned home. On the tour (some of which we either walked or just drove by since it was hard to find a trolley) we saw some of the monuments (stopped at Jefferson) and spent quite a bit of time at Arlington. Also stopped at the White House and the Natural History Museum. We didn't have time to do the green line tour which included the zoo and the National Cathedral. Because of time constraints we ate dinner at the hotel restaurant, (forgot the name) and then headed back out to the nighttime tour. While we enjoyed it, I'm not sure it's the "must see" that I heard and read. The Lincoln Memorial was fantastic, but I think some of the others, especially the Vietnam Memorial would be better during the day. I wish one of the tours had stopped at the World War 11 Memorial. The daytime tour drove by but doesn't stop there. Sunday we went to a very beautiful and crowded Church for Easter, St. Matthews. From there we drove to Old Town Alexandria and had brunch at Vermilion (excellent) and then visited some relatives before heading home. All in all it was a good trip. Thanks everyone for your help planning.
