Washington, DC Hotels
As anyone heard of the hotel, Washington Plaza Hotel in Washington DC? It apparently is 4 blocks from the White House. My family and I are traveling there in March 2004 and found this hotel listed on American Airlines website.

I've been doing extensive research on all the DC hotels as I'm going there in 3 weeks. The Washington Plaza has mixed reviews on tripadvisor.com, and considering there are a multitude of hotels within walking distance of the White House (or a short Metro ride away) you would be better off with another option.
Other hotels that I have checked into thoroughly that I would recommend that are all close to the White House and other monuments are as follows:
Hay Adams (very expensive!)
Holiday Inn - Washington Central (moderate)
Radisson Barcelo - (moderate - expensive)
Hamilton Crowne Plaza - (moderate - expensive)
JW Marriott - (moderate - expensive)
St. Regis - (very expensive but did see a rate of $149 recently)
Hilton Garden Inn - Franklin Square 9 moderate)
Lincoln Suites Downtown - (moderate)
From what I understand you can also check into hotels in the Dupont Circle area, since there are a lot of restaurants and nightlife here and it is close by to the attractions.
Hope this helps, I will have more info after I get back obviously!

Check out:

They often have some decent deals for Washington DC. For LARGE rooms in the vicinity of the White House at decent rates, you can look at the State Plaza Hotel. We also regularly use the Radisson Barcelo (Dupont Circle) and we frequently get a great deal right off the website at:

golferb,
The Washington Plaza is a perfectly fine hotel located at Thomas Circle in DC. It's a bit more than 4 blocks to the White House...I'd say a good 5 or 6. There are other hotels more centrally located for the sights.
If it's important to be near the WH, this url might be helpful (and the website is very useful for trip planning):

All of the places mentioned by missjanna and flyboy are good choices. I also like quikbook for DC hotels.

This past June we were able to book rooms several times at the Watergate for $70 and $90 a night on Hotwire (of course, we didn't know which 4* or (is it 4.5)hotel it would be but ...) - amazing rooms with walkin closets, luxe baths, etc - it was great! quick, cheap taxi to White House, etc. My colleague went out running along the Potomac each morning and I hear they have a great pool though I was in meetings and never did make the plunge.
