Walking the Golden Gate Bridge
Will be in San Francisco on the way home from my niece's college graduation, and thought May might be a good time to try walking the Golden Gate Bridge. Has anyone of the forum taken this little walk? If we don't get a car this trip, any recommendations for getting to the start, lunch on the other side, and how to get back to the city?

The city bus (MUNI bus) no. 28 goes to the south parking lot of the Golden Gate Bridge. Double your hike by going over the Golden Gate Bridge and then on to Sausalito, from where you can take a ferry back to SF. Others may have alternative suggestions.

I'm getting old. Found an old thread I started on this subject back in 2008.
Thanks for these responses and the old ones. Back then several posters suggested started on the Sausalito end and walking across toward the city. Here are my questions:
1. If we want to take the ferry across to Sausalito, where would we pick it up?
2. StuDudley: you suggested starting across after 1 p.m. so the sun wouldn't be so high and in our eyes, obscuring views of the city. Do you think this holds true for May? Is a good time to start across maybe 2:00 so it's not too cold (sunset might be to cold for us Hawaiians)?
Any other suggestions?

If the wind comes from the west, there is no such thing as a warm wind, and it can be blowing in at any time; we can tell the tourists by their goose pimples on their arms and legs. I would take a wind jacket at a minimum regardless of how the weather feels in downtown SF.

From Sausalito to the Bridge, it is a VERY steep uphill hike.
The sun will be in your face and the downtown skyline will be silhouetted and not very scenic before around 2PM. Do it after that.
Try to do this walk on a week-end when bicyclists are required to use the west side of the bridge. There is a lot of discussion in the local paper about bicyclists interfearing with pedestrians on the east side of the bridge.

Hmm...2 miles uphill from Sausalito to the bridge might be too much of a climb for me, if it's as steep as you describe. If I take the ferry so I can start at the Sausalito end and perhaps have a late lunch before starting, what are my chances of getting a taxi to take me just to the bridge so I can walk back?
Alternately, I guess I could just start at the other end after 2 p.m. and look back toward the city.
Where do I get the ferry from the city to Sausalito?

I think Golden Gate transit buses are now allowed to let people off at the bridge. I recommend walking the bridge to Sausalito, from there either bus or boat back. We walked the other way, and got lost, ended up on the bike side of the bridge.
To the bridge you can take MUNI bus 28 (if staying in the Union Square area, walk over to Geary, take bus 38 to switch to 28) or on Sunday/holiday bus 76 on Sutter or Van Ness.
Golden Gate transit bus runs along Mission and Van Ness, same website as for ferry.

It looks like there might be Golden Gate Transit buses that stop at the toll plaza and in Sausalito.
