Walking Manhattan Theater District Little Italy
Hello,
My wife and I are going to be staying in a hotel in the theater district. We believe everything is withing walking distance, but we don't know if it is easier to take a cab or walk to Little Italy. It doesn't appear to be more than a couple miles. If you suggest we walk, are there any areas we should avoid?
Thank you

Walking from the theater district to Little Italy is more than a walk... it's a HIKE! (probably close to 2 1/2 miles, which is more than an hour in NYC) Sure it can be done, and it's a decent way to see parts of the city, but it'll likely take you close to an hour. I would recommend taking a cab or subway. Either of these modes of transport will take less than 15 minutes to get you to Little Italy, with the subway being the most reliable since you never know what kind of traffic jam you can hit in any part of the city.

A cab from the Theater District to Little Italy would probably run about $10-$12 (a close guess). The subway will run $1.50/pp, one way. You can also get unlimited ride metro cards which will allow you unlimited use of the subway and busses. One day pass is $4, and is one of the best deals going!
There are no schedules, as the subway runs very frequently and (on the main lines which run through Time Square/Theater District) you're not likley to have to wait more than 5 minutes or so from one train to the next. You can get a subway map from the booths in the subway, or your hotel will likely have one. I would take the subway most places you want to go, but unless you're from another big city, a good rule is not to ride the subway after 11:00pm. You can also view a subway map online at:

Any add'l questions, feel free to ask!

You can get maps & fare cards in any subway station. Since you are in the theater district, you may want to go to the one at 42nd Street between 7th Avenue and Broadway. The standard fare is $1.50 each ride, but you can buy an all day "fun pass" for $4 per person which allows you unlimited riding all day. You can buy these cards in vending machines in the subway.
If you are going to Little Italy, I would suggest taking the N or R train (look for the yellow symbol) from 42nd Street/Times Square, and get off at the Canal Street Station. If you walk east for a few blocks along Canal Street you will cross Mulberry Street. Turn left and go north (uptown) and you are in Little Italy. (Don't be confused by all of the Asian things you see, Little Italy and Chinatown border each other and often intermingle).

If you decide to walk you could route yourself through Greenwich Village and SOHO before getting to Little Italy. The south end of Little Italy is Canal St. Cross CAnal, going south, and you will be in Chinatown. A quick way to get there is by subway - N or R train which can be picked up at the Times Square station or at 49th Street and 7th Avenue. Other posts have indicated the cost. You get off at the CAnal Street station.
