Waimea Canyon Ridge Roads

Has anyone taken a 4WD Jeep down one of the Ridge Road offshoots of Waimea Canyon Drive? I'm esp interested in Ka-uhao Ridge Road? What are they like? Safe enough if you are adventerous without having to take any 70 degree climbs????

hi ttyme..
I have looked at those roads longingly on maps
and in person, but have really felt too intimidated to try 'em out in earnest! We have done some feel it out kind of toe-dipping, but alwyas end up feeling like were were gonna die if we continued..with too much nail digging backing up in rental cars. We have not rented a jeep and done this, though, and that might make a difference. Also, be sure you are aware of the hunting status, as i think many of these roads are made for this kind of access. Good luck and let us all know if you have some experiences to share in this regard.
I would like to ask folks out there if anyone has driven over the 2nd sction of stream in the drive to the trailhead past the arboretum. We have made it over that first bit many times(Opaekae stream, i reckon), but never even been close to daring the 2nd one! Is it ever safe to cross here? I have actually given this quest up as folly, but, i'm just curious if anyone has been nuts enough to do this as i've read it is not that out of the ordinary!

Do a search for "turn it on". That was a screen name for one of our best trip reporters. Roxy does not post here much anymore, but she did a trip report two or so years ago that including driving those roads in Waimea and Koke'e in a four whell drive vehicle.

Bill- Thank you so much, I did several searches and found nothing so Roxy's post is a good help!

Sea Wahine-If we brave it, I'll post it here for future travelers. We leave tomorrow! Can't wait.

For any interested in the Ridge Road adventure we took off of the Waimea Canyon Drive, you can check out day two of my trip report that has an overview at http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=1

It was spectacular, and worth doing for sure, but you do need a 4WD for clearance alone as the ruts get quite deep.
