Wailua River Kayak and Hike time

We are hoping to take the kayak trip down the Wailua River and then hike to the waterfall. How long should this excursion take (on our own with two kids, 5 and 9)? Is it difficult on the way back (current?)? Is the hike something my kids will enjoy and not find too hard? Is it worth it???

The whole trip can take about 3 to 4 hours. This includes the paddle up the river, hike to falls, hanging out at the falls, then returning back. Going up river is easy. Coming back down is a little harder as you have to fight the wind. The hike is easy, with only a few small hills. It is a fun, beautiful trip. Just go early before all the guided tours start invading the place.

Thanks for the info! Do you happen to know when those tours begin?

Not sure when the tours begin, but if you start up the river after 1000 am, it will be more crowded. You should go up around 800 or 900 am at the latest. Also remember to stay near the north bank of the river as the fern grotto boats use the middle of the river and they do not slow down for lost tourists.

you will be in two kayaks.... as I don't remember having a large enough one for 4 people....we were not experienced at kayaking at all with our kids,(we are all pretty lame athletically) they were early teens at the time. But don't count on much help from a 5 and 9 year old.

The journey isn't too bad, we had a bit of a time staying near the front of the group and they didn't seem too concerned that we might be struggling, but we all made it, the hike was easier than the kayak trip . It was fun though! I don't remember the current being as much problem as getting through some of the vines and trees towards the end of the trip.
