Waikiki - hotels, solo

I'm a frequent traveler to Mexico (2/3 star hotels are my usual), but only 1 trip to Hawaii. Looking for recommendations of a hotel on or near Waikiki that is low-key, not a high-rise, maybe family-run, that can be booked direct? Traveling solo, just for a couple days.

It's not a luxury hotel by any means, but I stayed at the best hotel this summer in Waikiki. I, too, was traveling solo. The hotel is the Hawaiiana Hotel (check their website) and is located on Beachwalk, right in the heart of Waikiki. It is a low-rise with 2 or 3 stories, depending on which building you're in. It is an older property but maintained very nicely with tropical flowers, trees and grassy areas all around and a lovely open air lobby & front desk. There are two pools, one "regular" sized one in the front and a smaller one in the back - both are nice. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Every morning they serve tropical juice and Kona coffee (complimentary) by the pool. They give you a sliced pineapple after you check in. The hotel is one block from the beach, 1/2 block from Kalakaua. The Bus runs right outside the back gate (if they're not on strike) and there are restaurants, shops & other hotels right there in walking distance. I loved the hotel's atmosphere and can't wait to go back in March.

suze - I forgot to mention that each room has a kitchenette. There aren't a lot of services like the bigger hotels offered at the Hawaiiana, it's kind of like being in a home away from home, more like a condo or apartment complex than a hotel. Since you mentioned you usually stay in 2/3 star hotels, I didn't want to mislead you that you would find a bunch of big hotel ammenities or srevices here. What you will find, though, is a lovely & relaxing slice of older Hawaii and the beauty that goes with it without the hustle and bustle of a huge hotel.

I'll have to remember about using the "star" system in discussions. It must mean quite different things in different places. I mentioned it originally only so people know that simple, basic accommodations are what I was looking for (many people would definitely NOT stay in a Mexican 2-star!). I post on several travel BB's, so this is interesting info I hadn't realized before (that a 2-star in another location might actually be a bit fancy).
