vegas to Grand Canyon

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a hotel to stay at for the Grand Canyon? I plan to drive from Vegas on March 20 to the South Rim. Hang out there a couple of days in the South Rim and then come back to Vegas. Anyone has a suggestion for a hotel for a single guy? Thanks.

If you don't mind sharing a bath, then the Bright Angel Lodge will allow you to walk 30 seconds and be at the Rim, for the costs of a Motel Six. Room are pretty basic, but the location can't be beat!!

We stayed at the Thunderbird Lodge, right on the canyon. Very basic room, but clean and convenient. After the lon drive from Vegas, its nice to be right in the park!

Hi, Did you drive vegas to Canyon? How long was the drive? Did you pass Hoover? Do you see anything just from driving by? Also, are there any real challenges for drivers who get a little bit afraid of really high peaks or dangerous curves?
Thanks

We drove from Vegas to the Canyon and made sure to include the Hoover Dam along the way. It took about five hours, not counting the stop at Hoover (we took the tour inside the dam). Mostly a boring drive, definitely nothing scary -- and I'm a very untrusting passenger and was not behind the wheel.

You better check for reservations---the Xanterra reservation website shows no rooms available in all of March at Bright Angel or El Tovar. Yavapai Lodge has a few dates open, of which March 20 is one. You might end up with a room in Tusayan.

I just booked a mule trip for one day on the 18th. Unfortunately, there are no rooms avialable for the Bright Angel Lodge so I will try to look for a room in Tusayan. I checked out hotels.com and they did not have that city listed. Does anyone have any hotel suggestion I can stay at? I guess 2 full days at the canyon should be enough. Thank you everyone.

Three years ago, we took a road trip from Houston to San Francisco with many stops along the way. Grand Canyon was one. We do not plan our stops but did try to book in the Park fir three days. We were not able to get reservations in the park so we reserved a room at the holiday Inn just outside . . but . . we called Bright Angel and El Tovar every day along the way in case there was a last minute cancelation and by golly . . on the day before our arrival, there was! ! . .

We got into the El Tovar for two of the three nites we wanted.

So the moral of this story is to check every day or so and you may get lucky!

Unlike some National Parks, there is really no private lodging that is right at where you would want to be at Grand Canyon. While outside-the-Park hotels are at the official edge of National Park, it is about a 15 minute drive to the actual Grand Canyon.

I would keep trying Xanterra and book whatever you can get, keep calling as noted above. You could also book a cancellable hotel outside Park - but it is hard to imagine you would have an availability problem outside Park at that time of year.

Check this URL, which is a good start although it MAY be out of date.
