Vegas or Orlando - January 2006
We are trying to decide which location would be best to escape the cold on the East Coast in mid-January.
Thinking of either the Gaylord Palms in Orlando, or the Mirage in Vegas. Just want to go for two nights.
At Gaylord Palms we could enjoy things inside their 40,000 sq. ft. dome and possibly go to a Disney Park (would think mid January we would be able to get into attractions quickly). Also would do the Canyon Ranch spa.
At Mirage we would be center strip so could enjoy all the hotels nearby & their attractions. Possibly see a show, shop, enjoy eating & hopefully winning a bit.
Hopefully if we can fly out of DC ok either the 13th of Jan. or the 27th of Jan. (Farmer's Almanac predicts cold, snowy winter).
Any ideas -- suggestions? Thanks in advance.

In January, Vegas is quite a bit warmer than my home town in the midwest. I visit Vegas every year in either Jan or Feb.
There is usually a huge building and trades convention in Vegas near the end of January. You might want to check out the schedule, as hotels will fill up, and rooms can cost more if there is great demand due to big conventions.
I enjoy FLA in January also, and like to rent a car and drive in the sun without having to dodge mounds of snow!
Either one would be a nice respite from the cold.

As Gotravel mentioned it is not "warm" in Vegas in January but it is not freezing either. Typically about 55F during the day, maybe a little warmer. Jeans and a long sleeved shirt are fine in the day with a light coat at night. Plus it does not snow here, so that wouldn't be an issue. I think if you have small kids with you head to Orlando...but otherwise Vegas would be great. It is a terrific time to see some of the surrounding areas such as Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon because it won't be hot. The Mirage is a really nice hotel and of course there is definitely a lot of attractions & shows, shopping and dining available.

We often visit Vegas in January--last year it was in the 80's and I laid out by the pool. Another year it was chilly and we wore sweatshirts the entire time. Kind of a crapshoot (SORRY--pun intended) but I'd go with Vegas every time over Orlando--just my opinion.
