Panecott - Red Mt. Resort borders Snow Canyon State Park, I'd be surprised if they aren't offering some sort of hiking excursion to the park. If not, take the time to go on your own (in the morning, it'll be really hot later in the day).

Thanks, WhereAreWe.

I know the resort has daily hikes as well as special excursions but I don't know if Snow Canyon was listed as one of them.

In any event, I enjoy exploring on my own so I'll definitely keep the car and put that on my list.

Cedar Breaks National Monument is in the area but maybe a bit of a drive to St George. It's about 80-90 minutes drive.

Hello Asia9900, I cannot help but to weigh in on a couple things:

1) Yes, you get some fantastic advice from Fodorites
2) Yes Utah NPs and other areas are a truly fantastic vacation, probably with the right planning and forethought even in hottest months. (I don't personally know.)
3) Regarding climbing the "corkscrew" spire, while it is amazing for someone like me who is afraid after more than 5 feet off the ground, you should really look at Alex Honnold on 60 minutes climbing El Capitan at Yosemite NP. It brings the word "amazing" to an entirely different level.
4) Lastly, Dad's can be alright sort of guys - especially on fantastic vacations. I wouldn't worry to much about having to have your son be with kids during this trip.

I just found out that Red Mt. Resort has evening yoga classes at Snow Canyon, so I'm guessing that at least one or more of the daily early morning hikes would go there as well.

Things are just looking better and better for this trip!

Thanks again to all of you for the detailed help. I truly appreciate it. I don't know Utah at all, just know I love national parks and want to start sharing the beauty of our country with my son who has seen a fair amount of the east coast already (we live in DC), but very little of the west. Much appreciated.
