We were just in Canyonlands this weekend. We did not take tours but drove our own 4wd vehicle. It was amazing to see the park. We also did Arches NP and that was excellent too.
If you need a place to stay, I highly recommend Cali Cochitta B & B! Check them out at: www.moabdreaminn.com
Hope this helps...

Hi bayridge,
The districts of Canyonlands are each very different. I have camped and hiked in the Needles District, but have not hiked in to the Chesler Park - yet. I did get to fly over it and it looks absolutely beautiful, really like a red rock park! Can't say about Horseshoe, I haven't seen that part yet either - and I live in Utah and go down to Moab at least once a year! That's how much there is to see and do.
Chesler Park would be wonderful, I can guarantee it. Both would be very worthwhile!
Have fun!

We drove into Islands in the Sky first. We could see Needles off in the distance. On the way home, we drove in to the Needles overlook and I wasn't impressed with the view. It was still way far away and no better really than Islands.
Hope this helps...

Hi again Bayridge,
Yes, the views of the Colorado River Canyon are much the same from either side, Island in the Sky & Deadhorse, or from the Needles Overlook.
HOWEVER, the part of the Needles that people go to for 4x4, hiking and camping is very different from Island in the Sky. The altitude, geology, scenery, plants, and animals - all very different. I actually much prefer Needles District. It is a longer drive from Moab.
