US citizen around the world tour suggestions needed
I am posting to this forum because I want the input of you regular US travelers. My husband and I are retiring next May. We have the time and budget for a 2 month trip. We want to go around the world in 60 days. I am looking for suggested itineraries, with perhaps some feedback as to why you chose the route. Our criteria is:
-Start and end in San Francisco
-Northern hemisphere only
-Exclude Ireland, England, Paris and Italy.
(already been there)
-Preferably 6-8 total stops
-Any mix of land/air is OK

Given SF as jumping off point, first stop logically - either Australia/NZ or far east (Thailand, Vietnam, Japan).
This will take you three-four weeks.
Next, either China and/or Russia, taking three more weeks.
Finish up with a relaxed week in sunny Spain or Portugal.

What a wonderful trip! I am pea green with envy. If it were me, I'd do this:
1. Japan first, 10 days. This beautiful country is just a wonder. The Shinkansen trains make it so easy to explore
2. Hong Kong, 1 week. It's not all city. Just on the outskirts is pretty countryside and beaches. Maybe even a side trip to Macau (though I wasn't so impressed, but others have different opinions)
3. China next, either by taking the train, or flying. Three weeks, because China is soooo big. To see Beijing will make your jaw drop. More people than you've ever seen, such interesting architecture... Watch a few Chinese movies like The Last Emperor to get you in the travel mood. See Guilin (sp?) before that dam floods it. Take a cruise up the Yangzee River. Marvel at the mixture of old and new in Shanghai.
4. Onto either Bali or Thailand, with the idea of relaxing at a nice resort on the beach. You will be worn out by China, trust me. Stay a week and collect yourself.
5. Remainder of time in either Russia, where I've never been, but must be intriguing, Greece to see the Acropolis, Dubrovnik to savor the ancient European charm of this seaside city, and any other previously Communist European country, because there's an entirely different flavor there than in countries that have always been free.
Bon Voyage!!! And don't forget the trip report when you're back home.
