I flew US Airways for the first time this summer and I'm not a fan either. I was zone 4 both ways and had to check our carry-on bags. The planes were old, falling apart (scary) and the service was not great. I plan on avoiding them even if it means a higher fare on another airline.

Check your bag for a wooden leg that flew United and ended up with U.S. Air.

clark, if you fly United, you're already a leg up on US Air.

I must be in the minority..........I use USAir exclusively to fly from Reno to either Cabo or Puerto Vallarta because of the convenient flight times, and haven't had a problem (yet). Two of my travel companions never pay to check their carry-ons, but the gate agent always offers to take them (meaning they get their bags checked for free). I usually sit somewhere in the middle of the plane and am usually Zone 3 or 4.

why not board zone 3 or 4? Why have this happen many times? why not just sit a few rows back?

Count me in as another person who has had a bad experience flying with US Air (flight supposedly from Ft. Myers to Manchester with a stop in Washington ended in Washington with no explanation, hours of denials that there was anything wrong, and continuing proclamations that it was just a delay until an hour past departure time the gate agent announced that the flight to Manchester had been cancelled and we could resume our trip the next day. When queried where we were supposed to spend the night, she told us to sleep in the airport and when asked for hotel information, she told us she had none.) If the only way to get from one place to another is US Air, I won't go there.

Zone 5 is stamped on your ticket and you cannot board before that. It isn't even always a question of sitting at the back of the plane. People in Zone 2 may sit in the back of the plane.
I think the post above should have been taken to a complaint.

I believe Zone assignments are random, which baffles me why I rarely end up with Zone 5..........

You can't just board and sit where you want to on any airline other than Southwest(at least that I know of).

I have experienced similar on several carriers. What I have experienced is that first they ask you to place your bag in the little metal gage that shows you bag does indeed fit. Then they try to talk you into checking your bag. I can usually get them to Gate Check the bag and thus save me the time at the carousel. With the small RJCanada planes on American(American Eagle), I get this treatment every single time, no matter what zone I am in or how full the plane is. And Yes, United and US Air does this. I'm pretty sure NEO is right Zone 5 and actually I think Zone 4 perhaps too. I do wonder if certain airports don't try to enforce it more.

That post is LEG-endary

spiroldog, I think you are addressing someone else, as your suggestion to me has nothing to do with anything in regards to me. as far as I know

Nope, I was addressing you.
You can somewhat guess what zone your gonna be assigned, but not totally. Besides, what if the airline is nearly full when you book? What if you book on a site like expedia, which sometimes doesn't assign seats until later.

At one point, I thought perhaps that Zone assignments were alphabetical somehow.

I copied and pasted this from another site---

I hate it when this happens.

My wife was forced to take US Airways for a short trip this week. She checked in online, and of course got "Zone 5" for boarding, even though she checked in 12 hrs before the flight. So when she gets on, of course there is no room overhead for her bag, and they make her check it. It wasn't lost, at least, but it did take over 30 minutes for her bag to arrive at the luggage carousel.

What upset her was she saw that on this particular flight a number of US Airways flight crews were on board, traveling to another destination (not working), and that most of these people had 3 bags that they stored in the overhead compartments. Now, we are only allowed to carry on one item for overhead storage, and it sounds like this rule does not apply to their own employees.

Nothing I can do about it, but when there is a policy regarding luggage that can be carried on board and stored overhead, it should apply to all passengers equally. Not that the airlines care about their customers anymore, but it isn't too much to ask that all passengers on a flight get treated equally.

OMG. Spiro hasn't a "real" clue. I have found it interesting to watch "zones" on USAir, and actually there is a somewhat good quality about them--some are in the 'way back, some in the middle, etc.
I am fortunately watching this from a zone 2 boarding usually in the middle of the plane. SO they are trying to get people ON TO the dam__d plane from front to back and an on time departure. I do think this helps us all--and the airline.
What I find MOST abhorrhent is the person trying to get his/her bag in the overhead, standing IN the aisle for X minutes, and refusing to step into the seating area to allow the myriad people behind him to get by TO the BACK of the plane.
one time I watched an a hole who was seated in the exit row hold everyone up and he was so disturbed by my suggesting he could just step in.
So it take all kinds.

I would assume the 45 minute wait for baggage is a PHL problem, not a USAir problem.

I had to gate check my carry on my flight to Chicago and my bag was waiting for me when I got to baggage claim.at OHare.

PHL has issues. Even flying Lufthansa we wait for our bags a while at PHL.

For those of you who have the US Air credit card. Are your spouses allowed to board with you if they have their a card in their name on the same account with you? I have been told that only the primary card holder can get priority boarding which is annoying. The spouse can have a card on the same account and very well may be the one that gives them the most business.

Interesting question, travelenthusiast. With American, a companion can board with the other person, but haven't had a chance yet to check out how that works with US Airways. I want to say I can't imagine why they wouldn't let two people traveling together board together, but then this IS US Air we're talking about. So anything is possible.
